Title: Peter Jennings 1938-2005 08 Aug 2005 11:30:16 PM
http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2005-08-08-iconic-anchors_x.htm
The last of the iconic anchors
By Peter Johnson, USA TODAY
The death Sunday of ABC anchor Peter Jennings leaves a big void in
broadcast news, which in just nine months has lost all three iconic
anchors who had brought the news to millions of Americans for more than
two decades.
ABC's Peter Jennings, NBC's Tom Brokaw and CBS' Dan Rather all left
the air within a year of each other.

Jennings was the last of the Big Three anchors in an era of shrinking
broadcast audiences who have cable, satellite radio and Internet news
and entertainment options all vying for their attention.
But like his longtime competitors Tom Brokaw at NBC and Dan Rather at
CBS, Jennings had enough influence within ABC News to push for serious,
in-depth stories and coverage of world events that mattered to him and
that he felt viewers needed to know about - whether they realized it
or not.
And that's something viewers might never see again.
The Big Three anchors "used their extraordinary power to fight for
serious and important stories," says CBS News president Andrew Heyward.
"And in a business that has tended toward the trivial or tabloid,
there's a risk that if the next generation of anchors doesn't
doesn't have the clout, that it'll be up to a combination of them and
their producers to lobby corporate higher-ups for reporting of serious
journalism."

He originally came from Canada. Only became an American citizen after his
mother died (she didn't want him to)
Our best usually go to the US. The market is too small here.
