One less country Bush has to remember as a coalition partner for the next
debates ...
-----------------------------------------------------
Poland to pull troops out of Iraq
(CNN) -- Poland will reduce its commitment of forces to the war in Iraq by
40 percent by January 2005, the Polish Defense Ministry in Warsaw says.
But Poland's prime minister and defense minister gave contradictory public
statements on the exact timetable for the withdrawal of troops.
Currently, Poland has 2,500 soldiers committed to Operation Iraqi Freedom,
but will reduce that number to 1,500 by January 2005, the Defense Ministry
told CNN.
The remaining troops will leave Iraq by December 2005.
Poland has been one of Washington's staunchest allies over the war in Iraq,
and in last week's TV debate with Senator John Kerry, U.S. President George
W. Bush specifically mentioned their contribution.
Kerry told Bush: "When we went in, there were three countries: Great
Britain, Australia and the United States. That's not a grand coalition. We
can do better."
Bush replied: "Well, actually, he forgot Poland. And now there's 30 nations
involved, standing side by side with our American troops."
So far, 17 Poles have died in Iraq and opinion polls show nearly three
quarters of the public opposing troop deployment there, putting pressure on
Prime Minister Marek Belka to present a timetable for withdrawing the
contingent.
Polish ministers seemed at odds Monday over moves to a pullout.
Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily he
thought the deadline to pull out troops -- which now control south-central
Iraq -- should coincide with the expiration of a United Nations Security
Council resolution at the end of 2005.
Asked if that meant a pullout by the end of next year, he said: "That should
be time for our troops' withdrawal."
"That does not mean however that if a stabilization mission was continued,
Polish troops would be completely pulled out from Iraq. A group of officers
at the headquarters, training centers, maybe a group of observers could
still remain."
But Belka, the prime minister, said he had not authorized Szmajdzinski to
make such a statement, which departs from Warsaw's long-standing position
that troops would remain in Iraq "as long as it takes" to complete their
mission.
Belka, who before becoming prime minister in May, worked for nearly a year
at the U.S.-led temporary administration in Iraq, said Szmajdzinski did not
clear his comments with him.
Asked if he had approved this timetable, he told Reuters: "No. Today I will
see him and I will meet (Foreign Minister Wlodzimierz) Cimoszewicz and when
I have more to say I'll let you know."
Cimoszewicz told Reuters it was too early to give a concrete date or
timetable for Poland's troop withdrawal.
Poland commands a multinational force of 8,000 troops, including its 2,500
Polish soldiers. Szmajdzinski has already said it plans to "significantly"
reduce its troops after general elections were held in Iraq early next year.
Szmajdzinski's first declaration on the timing of Polish troops withdrawal
followed pressure from the government's junior partner, the Labor Union,
Reuters reported.
Belka's left-wing government faces a parliamentary vote of confidence later
this month, which it is expected to win.
Poland is due to hold parliamentary elections by mid-2005.
The ruling left is expected to lose to mainstream right-wing opposition
parties which also supported Poland's military engagement in Iraq, Reuters
said.
CNN's Masha Medvedeva contributed to this story.

Bah, the one who used that was Krib. I merely put his puke under his nose.

For the picture to be really accurate about you and Cuan assholes, the
what if they mated would require that they take two already mated pictures.
