Police Start to Question Michelle Leslie
Wednesday, 24 August, 2005 | 05:25 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Denpasar, Bali:Michelle Leslie, an Australian model
who was arrested in Denpasar on Saturday (21/08), has appointed M.
Rifan as her lawyer.
Bali Police have started to question Leslie, who has the popular name
of Michelle Lee.
"We will try to prove the charges brought against her," said Bali
Police Narcotics Director Adj. Comm. Bambang Sugiharto in Denpasar on
Tuesday (23/08).
The police have already taken a sample of Leslie's urine bur are
still await the results of the laboratory test.
According to Sugiharto, the police have also already requested the
assistance of the Australian police in order to obtain Leslie's
criminal record.
Leslie's lawyer M. Rifan said that he was yet able to see the results
of the laboratory test and other evidence seized by the police.
Rifan said that the police might charge Leslie for drug possession,
which has a maximum sentence of between 4 and 15 years imprisonment.
"It's all in the hands of the police because we're still in the
investigation stage. At the moment, I am only protecting my client's
rights," said Rifan, who is handling the defense of many other
Australian citizens, charged in drug cases in Bali.
National Police chief Gen. Sutanto said that the police would continue
carrying out the operation to eradicate drug trafficking in Indonesia,
including Bali.
"This is good for the image of Bali because people will know that
Bali is not a drug trafficking area," stated Sutanto. (Rofiqi

Indonesia's Justice and Presidential Pardons for Murderers stinks.
Murder innocent people and expect a reduced sentence, not death.
Get caught with drugs and recieve a life sentence, but no pardon. Pardons
seem to apply ONLY to Indonesians, not foreigners. Where is the
equality...and justice.

LOL.
But God, surely her minders, or her brain would have said something.
It's not like she flew to Bali from Australia fresh out of modelling
school.
She flew from Singapore, a country notorious for hanging drug
smugglers, into Bali, where they get shot instead of hung. How dumb can
you get. Even if a friend wanted to piggyback their ***** in my bag,
I'll probably say no.

I agree with you that any person who "takes/consumes" drugs and knows the

What I find discriminatory is that Indonesian police are now targetting

============================================================================
===============================
A DOCUMENT in which Australian model Michelle Leslie admits to being an
ecstasy addict is a fake, her Indonesian lawyer claimed today.
"It is a fake document," Mohammad Rifan said of an alleged police record of
interview with the Adelaide-born model, who is being held in Bali accused of
possessing the party drug ecstasy.
Media reports cited what was purported to be a photocopy of a signed,
four-and-a half-page transcript of a Bali police interview with Ms Leslie on
Wednesday.
According to the alleged transcript, Ms Leslie had told her interrogators
that she feared she was hooked on the drug, and had sought treatment for the
problem in Australia.
Mr Rifan did not say who might have forged such a document.
But a transcript of interview was a confidential document and it "was not
possible for Australian journalists to get that statement", he said.
"So I am sure it is a fake."
The alleged transcript appeared to carry signatures from Ms Leslie and Mr
Rifan as well as the police officers who questioned her.
Mr Rifan said he had signed many documents, but not that one.
He said anyone could make a forgery.
"It is not difficult," he said.
Ms Leslie was detained during a routine drug sweep outside a Bali dance
party on Saturday, when police found two ecstasy pills wrapped in tissue
paper in her handbag.
According to the alleged transcript, Ms Leslie said she could not enjoy
parties without taking ecstasy.
However, her parents said she did not take drugs, and urine tests after her
arrest were negative.
Authorities were waiting today for the results of blood tests.
Mr Rifan also scoffed at separate claims by Bali drug squad chief Colonel
Bambang Sugiarto that Ms Leslie had admitted to having an addiction.
"Addicted? She's never talked about being addicted," he said.
A spokesman for the model's family and Australian lawyer, Ross Hill, also
denied the claims of addiction.
"Ms Leslie strenuously denies the allegations being made against her and
shall vigorously defend any such claims," the spokesman said in a statement.
Ms Leslie made no comment today as she was taken from her holding cell to an
office in Bali's sprawling police complex, apparently for more questioning.
She was escorted by several officers and a friend identified only as Vera.
Ms Leslie once again covered her face with a sarong.
Mr Rifan said documents pertaining to a criminal investigation should not be
leaked.
"Everyone must respect legal procedures that are applied in Indonesia," he
said.
Mr Rifan also brushed aside suggestions that an admission to being an addict
would ensure leniency if Ms Leslie's case went to trial.
Recently, another of Mr Rifan's clients, South Australian John Pyle, was
handed a jail term of only five months, for using hashish in Bali, after he
said he was addicted and was being treated by a doctor.
No formal charges have been laid against Ms Leslie, but she is being held on
suspicion of ecstasy possession, an offence that can carry a maximum term of
15 years in prison.
Mr Rifan said he did not yet know whether his client would face that exact
charge, and he urged police to conduct their investigation quickly.

Yes..she fired her original Bali lawyer and has both an Aussie and a new

You are right...it is a mess but hopefully all those that are innoccently

The fact that the Indonesian police are targeting tourists and not the
traffickers will harm the Balinese tourism..less people will be willing to
travel there as they fear being setup as they have no control over their
luggage before collection....

I believe she fired her Balinese lawyer because he was so willing to
concede the claims of addiction coming from the Balinese cops. I agree
that it's a mess, but at least these people are taking fast action and
not talking too much. The Corby circus was bound to end in tears.

I agree there with you regarding Corby - her Indonesian legal team seemed
totally incompetent and she now faces the results of their inability to
defend and prove her innocence. Makes you wonder when when a person travels

Oh please, you're being a bit melodramatic here.
It's not like all these drug charges are trumped up charges. All those
caught has admitted possession. Of course they are going to make some
case for leniency, either by saying they are addicted, or that they
were planted in their luggage.

Wrong!!!!...they havent ALL admitted possession....Corby certainly
didnt..and she got 20 years, and neither has Michelle Leslie!!

The Indonesians still havent proved that the drugs in Corby's baggage WASNT

The Indonesians don't need to prove anything. Corby & Michelle are the
ones who need to prove that the drugs were planted.
How much of a case would you have if you were picked up on the street
by the coppers here in Australia, and they found drugs in your
possession, but you said that you had no idea they were there, and they
must have been planted?

If I have the right person, wasn't she caught with 2 ecstasy tablets?
I don't like young people taking drugs, but 2 tablets is clearly for
personal use, this is not like smuggling a couple of kilos of heroin.
I suspect she'll get a heavy fine, maybe 12 months at worst.
She is clearly not trafficing, which they are really dark on.
The other joker is screwed, sounds like he was right into it.
Firing squad for him I think.
She's going to get more attention, not just because she's female and
good looking, but because it was just 2 tabs. Most people would
consider that an offence sure, but trivial compared to trafficing.
Michelle Corby is not over yet either. Some fairly big issues with the
evidence are coming up, it seems some of it has disappeared.

If I have the right person, wasn't she caught with 2 ecstasy tablets?
I don't like young people taking drugs, but 2 tablets is clearly for
personal use, this is not like smuggling a couple of kilos of heroin.
I read it was one tablet, bought by a friend, Mia, who placed it in her bag
unbeknowst to Michelle.
The police are trying to find this friend, Mia.
I suspect she'll get a heavy fine, maybe 12 months at worst.
She is clearly not trafficing, which they are really dark on.
Its been mentioned that she might get 15 years....who knows with Indonesian
"justice" as there appears to be laws for Indonesians and foreigners, drugs
and murder.
The other joker is screwed, sounds like he was right into it.
Firing squad for him I think.
She's going to get more attention, not just because she's female and
good looking, but because it was just 2 tabs. Most people would
consider that an offence sure, but trivial compared to trafficing.is
It doenst matter if she is male or female or good looking - if the person
was framed or had drugs placed in their possession without their knowledge,
that is the issue.
Michelle Corby is not over yet either. Some fairly big issues with the
evidence are coming up, it seems some of it has disappeared.
y
I think the Indonesian legal team she had screwed it up for
her.....unfortunately.

Australians

Problem is the way they talk about it, they are saying drugs in
Australia is fine, just don't be caught with it in Asia. Like asians
have the wrong attitude towards drugs.
She'll only get a few months at most, but for a vain, spoiled model,
that will be more than enough.
