Subject: Re: Out of interest, what is/generates a "purple haze"?
First of all, "purple haze" didn't originate yesterday. It's a phrase
that's, oh, 35 years old. It's another part of the culture that seems to
have escaped you, putting you at the disadvantage in which you now reside.
But what sort of numbnuts, knowing full well that hip-hop is crawling with
pot smokers (not "narcotics users", you fucking herb), would then make the
leap to "I think 'purple haze' refers to methamphetamine users"?
"Purple Haze" is a song by Jimmy Hendrix that refers to an LSD trip, something
anyone who's tripped would realize from the lyrics. Though technically in
the "classic rock" category (which I refer to as "moldy old hippie music"),
Jimmy Hendrix was black and "hip-hop" (along with "rap" or just my favorite
"***** music") is often used by whites to refer to any black music. But
while black music often glorifies drugs, so does white music so singling out
hip-hop (even if Jimmy Hendrix isn't that genre) isn't fair.
Don't put too much stock in what this guy has to say about Hendrix -
he can't even spell his first name.
Anyone in the know can tell you that Purple Haze isn't about drugs at
all.
You see, Jimi's 4-year-old son, Julian, came home from school one day
with a picture he had drawn. It looked like he had just scribbled all
over the page with a purple crayon, but in fact he had drawn what the
school looked like that day.
Despite being a huge success in the music world at the time, like
other black musicians, Jimi was completely screwed by the record
companies and he lived in a small house in a poor school district next
to a Dow Chemical plant.
There was a top-secret program to come up with something more powerful
than Agent Orange. If it had succeeded, it would have been known as
Agent Purple, but Agent Purple turned out to be too volatile and it
couldn't be contained and it also made everyone love everyone else.
"Purple Haze" is simply a reference to the clouds of Agent Purple that
leaked out of the Dow Chemical plant and enveloped Julian Hendrix's
school that day. Julian and his classmates and teachers were left
with "permanent grin" which lasted 12 years, but the gov't quickly
destroyed all info and evidence of it. Is that wild or what???
:)
