Listen to Putin
12 February 2007
THESE are clearly unprecedented times in international politics. And
despite the harsh manner of Russian President Vladimir Putin=E2=80=99s spee=
ch
at Munich notwithstanding, it did point to most of the reasons
responsible for the situation. Except for the highest offices in
Washington, there is near unanimous international consensus that the
Bush administration=E2=80=99s attempt at employing the neocon ideology has
been a marked failure, of colossal proportions, with disastrous
economic, political and humanitarian repercussions.
It is clear that over the last five years especially, the United
States has pursued a hegemonic, uni-polar agenda, setting dangerous
international precedents while trying to establish its writ as the
world=E2=80=99s sole centre of power. The Russian president is spot on in
implying that because of America=E2=80=99s bypassing the United Nations in
using military force, weaker nations=E2=80=99 insecurity is pushing them to
arms races. More so because =E2=80=9Cnobody can hide behind international l=
aw=E2=80=9D
anymore.
The sharp rebuke from the American contingent was no doubt
predictable. But those defending Washington must have noted how their
rhetoric reeked of double standards. It is simply not possible to deny
that America has =E2=80=9Coverstepped its borders in all spheres=E2=80=9D a=
nd =E2=80=9Cimposed
itself on other states=E2=80=9D. It is also hard to rebut the claim that the
US has picked fight after fight =E2=80=9Cwithout achieving a full-fledged
solution to any of them=E2=80=9D. And in doing so it has left behind a tra=
il
of needless death and destruction, with no justification whatsoever.
Furthermore, as lopsided as Washington=E2=80=99s foreign policy has been, t=
he
domestic political spillover is not less grim and long-term. Like the
rest of the world, America=E2=80=99s polity=E2=80=99s pundits are realising=
how the
constitution empowers the seat of the president to potentially wreak
bloody havoc in all corners of the globe, in face of mounting
domestic, international and even Congressional disapproval.
Despite these facts, there is no admission of mistakes having been
made from Washington, remorse being a far-off thing. That means any
attempt at addressing many of the US-created disasters is definitely
not around the corner.
President Putin has done the right thing by calling a spade a spade.
Other world leaders should bolster this stance, lest the unprecedented
times take more turns for the worse.

I never really imagined, certainly not back in those Kruschev 'shoe

They have though.
If asked today who I would trust the more, Putin or Bush, I should

Personally I wouldn't trust either one. Take your pick... the
amazing brainless bush-man born without any conscience or
moral values, or a former kgb spy. There are no candidates for
sainthood here.

That's more like it. Putin at least seems to have a conscience.

Take a look at your own 'rights', then look again at 'rights' extended

increased.

What gets me is not your choice to play this sock

smugness on top.

I worked there. Shot a few as well. Don't you dare to try to tell me
about Ireland you little child. Grow up and experience things before
you write.

Oh Stevie and the American love of 'conspiracy' ideas.

Uh, the American love of 'conspiracy' ideas is predominantly on the
political left these days, Rickie. Some of them claim that Bush did
not merely fail to stop 9/11, he actually caused it by having the WTC
buildings brought down by controlled demolition.
It's odd that you'd try to connect me to a love of 'conspiracy' ideas,
when I have no history of promoting any particular conspiracy; in
fact, I have argued (on this group and others) *against* some of the
more hysterical leftist conspiracy theories.

If he did poison the bloody spy, I don't care...do you?

Yes, unlike you I'd like to know why that man was murdered. He was
murdered while investigating the prior execution-style murder of a
journalist who was critical of Putin. That raises suspicion, don't you
think?

Take a look at your own 'rights', then look again at 'rights' extended
to the Russian people. Yours have reduced.

Which of my rights have been reduced?

The Russians have increased.

It was going in the right direction under Gorbachev and Yeltsin. But
it has reversed under Putin, as Gorbachev and Yeltsin warned a couple
of years ago:
Article: Putin reforms threaten Russian rights, say former leaders
http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/paperchase/2004/09/putin-reforms-threaten-russian-rights.php

Please oh please don't even murmer 'control of the press'. I think you
really do believe everything you see written down. Is that something
that comes with bible acceptance?

Do you know how many journalists in Russia have been murdered,
execution-style, since Putin assumed power? Then maybe you can tell me
the number of American journalists who have been murdered under
similar circumstances.

Every Country has it's sensitive issues and prohibits publication on a
variety of grounds. None less so that the USA.

Apparently you haven't read the New York Times in the last year or so.
On more than one occasion, they freely published classified government
documents (which would be prohibited except for our Bill of Rights,
which does not allow the government to interfere with freedom of the
press). Do you think something like that will be happening in Russia
while Putin is in power?

God, but you are shallow.

Same back at ya, Rickie. Anyone who has no interest in learning the
reason behind that man's murder (while he was investigating a prior
execution-style murder of a Russian journalist) is nothing but
shallow. Have a nice day.

As I'm sure you've noticed, much of Putin's criticism of the US is
justified, as is criticism coming from Hugo Chavez of US foreign
policy.
The hard kernels of truth are there in their accusations and
statements, despite some expectant propaganda to favor themselves, or
their nation's goals. Bush and Cheney, however, increasingly reflect a
mindset of self-delusion, aggression, arrogance, and paranoia.
When the Poodle Dog decided he wasn't going to militarily support
Bush's Iraq 'surge', and Maliki announced he didn't want Bush and
Ahmadinejad to use his nation as a pissing ground between them, more
large fissures in the credibility of the American administration's
already beleagured foreign policy opened up for all to see.
I don't trust anyone who worked in intel services at any level,
especially at the executive level. Neither do I trust ex-CEOs of no-
bid contractors with government, nor ex-global oil executives in
political office.

Agreed. Bush's corruption is religious and big money backed (oil and
defence and contractor industries), whereas Putin's is probably more
sinister (power?).
