Peter Zamora, co-chair of the Washington-based Hispanic Education Coalition,
which supports bilingual education, said, "The tone of his comments was very
hateful. Spanish is spoken by many individuals who do not live in the
ghetto."
He said research has shown "that bilingual education is the best method of
teaching English to non-English speakers." Spanish-speakers, he said, know
they need to learn English. "There's no resistance to learning English,
really, among immigrants, among native-born citizens. Everyone wants to
learn English because it's what you need to thrive in this country."
In the past, Gingrich has supported making English the nation's official
language. He's also said all American children should learn English and that
other languages should be secondary in schools.
In 1995, for example, he said bilingualism poses "long-term dangers to the
fabric of our nation" and that "allowing bilingualism to continue to grow is
very dangerous."
Bilingual programs teach students reading, arithmetic and other basic skills
in their native language so they do not fall behind while mastering English.
Since 1975, the Voting Rights Act has required ballots and other election
assistance in languages other than English in jurisdictions where at least 5
percent of voting-age citizens are not proficient in English and literacy
rates are below the national average.
The issue of a national language will likely re-emerge when Congress
considers immigration legislation later this year.

speaking to groups is the lack of importance given to English as the
language of success in the United States today. Whether it's the
government's printing election ballots in other languages or bilingual
education, Americans are concerned about the future of English as a unifying
bond in our country.

Way to go Newt. Finally, somebody with some sense.
All voters, that's A-L-L, are required to be a citizen. All naturalized
citizens are required to learn english as part of the process to become
naturalized. If one was required to learn english in order to be allowed to
vote, why do we need ballots in any other language?
Voting is a right, but it carries responsibilities. Among them is a
responsibility to know what is going on.

time to invest in subprime brokerage houses, going on to say that that
market was run by professionals, and that the unskilled should not
dabble in it. Talk about spin. Those 'professionals' are declaring

average investor needed to lower expectations, and to sum up what was
said, is going to be lucky if they can maintain their nesteggs, much
less expect any growth.

here , the recreationals are slowly being legislated against and
attempted to be controlled , I understand shrooms are controlled by law
and toad licking is either outlawed or being outlawed .
the only good bit is that tho *most* cops know what marijuana plants
look like ( one place I stayed the lady cop next door only twigged to
what they were when she saw them in bud ) the cops are not botanists ,
and regularly walk past pretty flowers like opium poppies , and obscure
natives that are powerful but restricted plants .
there are more than just abortion herbs , there are herbs that help
control parkinsons disease symptoms ( pot ) are powerful painkillers (
pot , quarva , bush onion , black wattle among a LOT of others ) are
pretty good anti inflamitories ( quarva , bush onion , ginger root) and
are pretty good antiseptics ( smoked kerosene grass ) and plants that
promote kidney function ( bush grapes ) and ones that act as general
pickme ups and tonics ( qunadong nut kernals , beach almonds , billy

I dont know the botanitical names for these , I do know the plants and
where to find them and how to use them . Unfortunately I have sour luck
trying to get them to grow in my garden tho so I continue harvestin them
wild .
the use of plants tho is practical survival skils , just one of a range
of "primtive" skills .
TO my thinking a man who can equaly well make use of what is around him
naturaly as well as the things provided for $$ comercialy , is truly
civilised , butt he person who has to rely entirely on paid for
comercial goods is leaning toward realy primitive
