Home now Wolfy. Got home this morning. Exhausted and smelly :-) Had a
kip and just got up. We took a taxi from Long Hua to the Hong Kong
border where we had to go through customs. The drive was a
nightmare...fuckin' lunatics on the roads. A two lane motorway and the
cars, trucks and busses are 7 wide. As soon as one gets to the HK side
it's fine, (a different taxi too 'cos HK won't let the average Chink
drive there). A stretch of 100m and the traffic is a world of
difference. Mind you, they drive on the right side of the road in
HK...old Brit customs. We got to the airport at about ten in the
morning and weren't gonna fly out till 20.35 that night so we hopped
on the airport train and went into central HK for the day. Fuckin'
hot! We found a really nice little restaurant along the harbour, with
a fantastic view, (mind you, you only have to turn your head in HK for
a fantastic view), where we had a couple of pints and a sirloin steak
which was dirt cheap and very good. There we got instructions from the
waitress on how to get to the cheap side of town. Turned out it wasn't
so far from where we were. Markets and stuff. We went on a mad
shopping spree there and bought loads of *****...clothes and electronic
***** mostly. My hair was long and bet into my head 'cos I was sweating
like a pig, everyone was looking at me weirdly so I thought *****-it,
lets go to a hairdresser and cut it off. So we did, and the
airconditioning in the salon was an extra treat. Cut it short for 120
HKD which is about a quarter of what I'de have paid here :-) Then we
headed back to the airport and had a few in the lounge waiting for the
flight to Bangkok.
In Long Hua after work the other night we were invited out by our
hosts to dinner which was great. They took us to a "real" restaurant
as opposed to a tourist one. Grub was wonderful. Real Chinese cuisine
done by real Chinese. Then we went on another shopping spree...lots of
those when one is in China :-) they're a must. Then we went for a foot
massage :-). I travelled with two guys and a girl to China and some of
our collegues were already there. We were six who went for the
massage...three blokes, the bird and one of our hosts. Magic. A room
with the necessary comfy chairs, a bar with waiter service and then
the gorgeous young nubile girlies who would do the job. Started with
putting your feet into a bucket of hot water, which was just as well
'cos I was a bit paranoid about letting this gorgeous little thing
touch my sweaty feet which I'de been walking around on all day in that
sweltering heat. But they had all that sussed. Then they came in with
a lavander bath which we had to keep our feet in whilst they started
massaging our upper bodies...this was to be a foot massage I thought
but apparently this is part of it :-) They were great, at least mine
was, and they started with the hands, then arms, then shoulders and
then the back. Fuckin' great. We had a great larf with these girls too
'cos our host was a Chink and could translate. Really really relaxing
good larf. Then they got to the feet where they started by drying them
and then using an open razor shaved away all the dead skin from all
over the feet. Again it was magic. Then it was a "ginger bath" where
they put a layer of hot ginger all over our feet and all the way up to
the knees. Then wrapped it in very hot towels for about twenty
minutes. All the while with a waiter coming in filling up our beers.
Then it was the foot massage itself. That was amazing. Pulling,
pushing, stretching, squashing, hmmm great. After that then it was one
leg at a time from the thigh to the foot. The whole massage took just
over two hours and including the beers cost 83 yuan, a pittance.
All in all a great trip...best one yet.
Unfortunately, we didn't get stuck in Bangkok. Maybe next time :-)

Hell Chris, that's one rather nice Cultural 'wander'!
I had the same suprise in Hong Kong regarding driving on the left too.
Mind, the parts I wandered around, people seemed to be driving
wherever they wanted to!
The foot massage is very popular and in fact, a Thai tradition. I've
never had one, mainly due to those reasons that concerned you at the
time...pretty girls and smelly feet make for bad companions!
The Eastern Nations have quite a 'thing' about feet, don't they?
Although now illegal in China, foot binding still continues in the
more remote areas. Tiny feet being the mark of beauty within the
Culture. In Thailand, you must never put your feet up anywhere..it's
an unfogivable insult. Show someone the soles of your feet, albeit by
accident, then great offence is taken.
I HAVE to wander soon. Actually, I made a nice profit yesterday on a
stuffed Cormorant. Bought it for =EF=BF=BD110 and sold it for =EF=BF=BD560 =
a week
later! That should supply a ticket to Bangkok...;) I've got a stuffed
horse for sale at the moment..that looks like making quite a lot of
money..and the stuffed 'Lassie' Collie dog is bound to make quite a
bit too.
Turkey, if anything, is hotter still than the far East in Summer, so I
think you will be really boiling there. I saw Dani's ideal holiday
post and yes, that's the place for her!
Glad you are back Chris. It was a nice suprise when you posted from
China. My turn next!!

The foot massage is very popular and in fact, a Thai tradition. I've
never had one, mainly due to those reasons that concerned you at the
time...pretty girls and smelly feet make for bad companions!
That explains the first bucket of hot water :-) They know that and are
prepared. If you thought they drove erratically in HK you should see
how they drive in China. It's amazing to see cars there without dents
in them.
I knew that binding was forbidden but continues in rural areas. Hard
to break old habits unfortunately.
I HAVE to wander soon. Actually, I made a nice profit yesterday on a
stuffed Cormorant. Bought it for ?110 and sold it for ?560 a week
later! That should supply a ticket to Bangkok...;) I've got a stuffed
horse for sale at the moment..that looks like making quite a lot of
money..and the stuffed 'Lassie' Collie dog is bound to make quite a
bit too.
A stuffed horse? It's not Shergar is it? Must've took a lot of sawdust
to fill a horse. Stuffed lassies, sounds like the menu in a Chinese
restaurant :-) Actually, whilst walking to the massage parlour my
collegue, the Chinese one, pointed out two restaurants, the menu's
posted outside, who sold "dog" as he said. Hot dogs I said? No
dog...on the menu. So Lassie be careful or you'll be stuffed with a
very nice mix of herbs :-)
Turkey, if anything, is hotter still than the far East in Summer, so I
think you will be really boiling there. I saw Dani's ideal holiday
post and yes, that's the place for her!
That's why we're going in June. It's hot yeah, but from July to the
end of Sept. it's unbearable. Last time I was in Turkey I arrived in
July and man was it hot. That was in 1987, almost exactly 20 years
ago. Mind you I was there for about six months and travelled around
the place...during my "travelling days". Great country, people are
fuckin' great and so friendly. Ended up in Istanbul which was great.
Sultan Ahmed part of town. Had a bite to eat at the pudding shop which
is world famous in it's own right but became even more famous because
it was the place that American twat bought his hash...you have seen
midnight express? My sister has a house in Turkey, in Kusadasi, and
has been hassling me for the last few years to go there with the kids.
I agreed this time, or rather I thought ***** it why not. Should be a
larf.
Glad you are back Chris. It was a nice suprise when you posted from
China. My turn next!!
Ricky-
Better hurry up then Ricky my old man. I have intentions of making up
some ***** and bull story to my job as to why I should go back there.
***** it I love it there. Particularly China. Not because of the prices
but because of the attitude, atmosphere. The people. The smiling
faces. The food. The whole thing. I would gladly move there to live.
At least for a couple of years or so. That same atmosphere seems to be
all over the far east, I noticed it in Thailand too. Yes there are
miserable poor people there but hell there are those people here too
in the west. I'm gonna take my kids down there maybe next year for a
bit. I have to. I want them to experience it. There's this special
feeling once one steps off that plane. Can't explain it but it's
there. You probably know what I mean.
Bit of chat about going off to the Dominican Republic too soon but
I'll have to wait and see what happens.

our collegues were already there.

That explains the first bucket of hot water :-) They know that and are
prepared. If you thought they drove erratically in HK you should see
how they drive in China. It's amazing to see cars there without dents
in them.
There's ...
