PS Of course your local altitude to the CNP is a function
of your local geographical latitude above the terrestrial
equator, and that is entirely dependent on local altitude,
since you're viewing the Sun's shadow at southing on your
local meridian of geographical longitude. Align two plumb-
bobs to each end of your line and place your scope in the
middle between them. Point your scope north, and south to
ensure its level placement above the southing-struck line.
Again this is primitive, but is easy and faster than most
all other methods of polar alignment. Check out Celestron
and Meade websites for polar alignment & collimation, e.g:
