Dear Joseph Newton,
Hey take a deep breath Dude! Slow down, nobody is out to get you! This
Country, founded by Christians such as myself, was and still is the most
tolerant in the world, period. In fact it is an element of our faith that
Tolerance must be first are foremost, only God has the right to judge Man.
Whatever you believe is your business. Look at the example of the Jews. I am
from Staten Island, NY, a Moravian "Praying Indian". On that Island many
religious groups settled to enjoy the complete freedom there, so that we
have the first Jewish Temple, cemetery, etc. The founders of Christian
Science, Jehovah's Witnesses, and others are buried on the grounds of the
Methodist Church there because other churches would not allow their
consecrated ground to accept "heretics".
The first Black incorporated Town is there, called Sandy Town, populated by
freed slaves, with their own Mayor, Council, etc. Roman Catholics, atheists,
witches, you name it were there. That is the America that was, but now it is
an America of Hatred and intolerance because fear and ignorance has taken
over, helped in no small way by people with your view point.
Take a moment to reflect, and about 3 years of reading and you will learn
that your viewpoint is based upon a foundation of lies and hatred. You
biggest victim is you and your family.

Venom and hatred? You were the one who stated "this country, founded
by christians". That is a typical xian hate statement spouted at
every chance in an attempt to change US history and deny the truth
that the founding fathers purposefully established a secular nation.
Frankly I held back. I allowed for the possibility that you were
simply misled by your fellow xians, rather than just mean and
spiteful. But that lie, about this country being founded on Christian
values, needs to be quashed before we become a theocracy.

I have already posted several, in this thread I believe, from a number of
the founders.
I'm not suggesting they setup a Christian state, I am suggesting that
your statement that this country being "founded on Christian values" is
in fact untrue.
But here's a recap of a few:
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation
was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions,
but on the gospel of Jesus Christ! For this very reason peoples of other
faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom of worship
here."
-- Patrick Henry.
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is
wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
-- John Adams, President, in an address to the military, October 11,
1798.
"The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to
form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws. All the miseries
and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice,
oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting
the precepts contained in the Bible."
-- Noah Webster, 1832
"We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the
power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all of our
political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern
ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the
Ten Commandments of God."

You don't post Jefferson who obviously disagreed with Patrick Henry.
He and others show that Patrick Henry is stretching the truth maybe a
bit, as orators are certainly notorious for doing.
At to the ten commandments, has American civilization advanced on the
principle of "Thou shalt not covet?" Seems to me that the thirteen
colonies have expanded quite a bit into the west into land that was
not owned by them or legally acquired from the original inhabitants.
Was not slavery engrained in the U.S. constitution, despite the claims
that all men are created equal?
Do you believe that land-stealing and slavery are the results of good
Christian teaching?
In fact in the U.S., as elsewhere, religion was and is something the
most people espouse and often say good words about but don't much let
interfere with the business of living and politicians capitalize on
it, always ready to call lie that Christian principles lie behind
whatever they are doing.
Was U.S. was founded on Jesus Christ who taught that one should sell
all one had, give it to ther poor, and then live on pure trust in God,
considering the lillies of the field and such. "Woe to the rich",
Jesus preached.
The U.S. government has never been a "Christian" government. Such a
thing is probably in impossiblity.
Imagine a court system run on the principle of "Judge not, lest ye be
judged!"
There are stupid, superstitious bits of lip-service to God built into
the system, such as the silly swearing of an oath on the very book in
which the founder of belief that gives the book its supposed powers
says it is wrong to swear an oath on anything, that anything more than
saying "Yes" or "No" is evil.
Of course, no other country or political system has been any better.
It is lawfully engrained freedom from compulsory religious beliefs
that in part prevents modern societies from crusades against
non-believers.

religion. I like your respect for tolerance.
IMHO, while Christians were among our founders, there is a difference
between theists and deists, and there must have been an atheist or
two.
I think they carefully left religion out of the constitution, and that
the First Amendment clinches it; leaving it to the individual.
This way, no one faith can use the Government as their pulpit, or
freedom is lost.
If you tend to agree, we need more people like you.
Caution: the following is sloppily written but is not meant to be
inflammatory:
The fact that a majority believe in a god may prompt some people to
say that this country was founded on Christianity. I believe that
those people are wrong; the constitution is a secular document
ALLOWING for freedom of religion. It's a fine but critical line drawn
here, it allows for freedom and tolerance and the people who say we
are founded on Cristianity are distorting the facts and are low on
tolerance, eager to use our Government as their pulpit.
Phew!!
And a lot of the higher ups currently running our government for Big
Oil are using religion to hypnotize about 85% of the population, the
believers. And former president Bush HAS said that atheists shouldn't
be considered as patriots or citizens.
Hold on, I didn't say RELIGION, but people hiding behind religion: as
usual in all politics, they pander to the widest voter base.
Are you one of the religious people who support seperation of church
and state? I hope so.
It's a fine line but it defines freedom, and is in jeapordy right
about now.

Quotes from the founders seem to disagree with you, the only
Constitutional prohibition against religion is disallowing the Government
to form a state (mandated) religion. This has been twisted in the courts
to prohibit many activities that are in and of themselves harmless.

"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation

but on the gospel of Jesus Christ! For this very reason peoples of other
faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom of worship

-- James Madison, fourth president of the U.S.
"The function of our schools is not to educate, or elevate society; but
rather to educate individuals and to equip them with the knowledge that
will enable them to take care of society's needs. . . . We should look
upon our schools -- not as a place to train the 'whole character' of the
child -- a responsibility that properly belongs to his family and church
-- but to train his mind."
-- Barry Goldwater.
"For over one hundred years Americans have been running a gigantic
experiment in government schools, trying to find out what a society looks
like without God. Now we know."
-- Douglas Wilson

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regardless of the opinion that you offer as proof,
the fact remains, these opinions were not drafted
into the body of Constitution.
If what you say regarding prohibition of a "state
(mandated) religion" is true, congress could legally
pass religious laws, ad infinitum, without declaring
an official religion... this is defiantly not so.
There are two antithetical clauses in the first
amendment regarding religion: one that prohibits
the government from legislating a "respect" for
religious laws, and one that prohibits the
government in "preventing" a citizen from
respecting religious laws.
This means the government must take a complete
"hands off" position regarding religion - thus the
separation of church and state. Equality requires
a secular state.
For those who don't understand old English, "an
establishment of religion" translates into modern: "a
religious establishment" meaning a church, temple,
synagogue, etc., or the religious body et al. It does
not mean "establishing a religion" as the religious
right would lead us to believe.
"Congress shall make no law respecting [a religious
establishment], nor shall it..."
One may interpret scripture to imply any meaning
desired... but this does not hold for the Constitution.
<opinions clipped>
One opinion cited, turns out to mean the opposite to
what the poster intended:
"The function of our schools is not to educate, or elevate society; but
rather to educate individuals and to equip them with the knowledge that
will enable them to take care of society's needs. . . . We should look
upon our schools -- not as a place to train the 'whole character' of the
child -- a responsibility that properly belongs to his family and church
-- but to train his mind."
-- Barry Goldwater.
Barry's position here was that religious instruction was
the responsibility of family and church, not the school's.
The school's role is to "train the mind".
Barry was the quintessential fiscal conservative.
A pity that you can't comprehend what you read, Fly...!

I belong to the school of thought that the Declaration of Independence and
the US Constitution are expressions of faith, but not necessarily Christian.
At the time the Kings of Europe were often the head of religious life in
their Kingdom. Thus the line was from God to the King to the Church to the
priest to man. The American revolution embraced the Protestant concept that
by reading the Bible the common man had no intervening authority on Earth;
therefore phrases like, "We hold these things to be Self Evident".

Whatever you believe is your business. Look at the example of the Jews. I
am
from Staten Island, NY, a Moravian "Praying Indian".
The first Black incorporated Town is there, called Sandy Town, populated
by
freed slaves, with their own Mayor, Council, etc. Roman Catholics,
atheists,
witches, you name it were there. That is the America that was, but now it
is
an America of Hatred and intolerance because fear and ignorance has taken
over, helped in no small way by people with your view point.
Take a moment to reflect, and about 3 years of reading and you will learn
