Mel Gibson Plans TV Miniseries on Holocaust

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 6 - Mel Gibson, whose "The Passion of the Christ" was
assailed by critics as an anti-Semitic passion play - and whose father has
been on record as a Holocaust denier - has a new project under way: a
nonfiction miniseries about the Holocaust.

I still liked Gibson's 'Braveheart' better than 'The Passion',
but almost anything that Mel Gibson touches turns to gold in
film or television, entertainment quality-wise.
Incidentally, I had a friend Rolph Van Houten who lived across
the court where I lived in California in the 1960s whose grand-
father was of the "Van Houten Chocolate" notoriety. His mother,
Lea, gave us a really big box packed with raw dark chocolate
fragments for Christmas one year--heavenly to say the least!
That Gibson would add his mastery to a series on the holocaust
is great news for everyone who recognizes how important it is
to remember the best and the worst in human history--especially
upon the heals of the great Simon Wiesenthal's recent passing.
I would hope that Steven Spielberg's 'Schindler's List' and
other great films on the subject matter (even looking back on
Rod Steiger's riveting performance in 'The Pawnbroker', for
that matter) will help inspire Gibson & Co. to make the very
best effort they've ever made to raise the bar another notch
(i.e. kind of like the final episode of 'SFU' raised the bar).
