Ouch...
Yet another nail in the coffin of Olympic coverage on broadcast network
TV. By the time NBC's contract is up in 2012, ESPN might be the only
network that wants it...
15.5 million viewers is only disappointing by past Olympic standards
but NBC would take it.
If present trends continue, NBC may not exist in 2012 anymore.

Or, if you're a fan of the ancient Mayan astronomical calendar,
the long-since predicted winter solstice of December 21st 2012
marks the end of a very, very long cycle of Earth's precession
which millions believe is directly associated with cataclysmic,
even apocalyptic, earth-changes portending the end of this old
empire. So NBC is pretty far down the list of human priorities.
I know, we can tell that to the NBC shareholders... :-D

So NBC proves, over and over, that people don't want to watch
ridiculous, jingoistic coverage, or the sappy tales of courageous
athletes battling against cancer, leukemia, and TMJ to come back and
compete.
Why don't they do something totally extraordinary and, say, just SHOW
THE PERFORMANCES? Confine the commentary to stuff like, "Oh!' or
"Wow!" or "That was cool!" Just because Bush is still president
doesn't mean the whole country is stuffed with idiots.
Or, if you're a fan of the ancient Mayan astronomical calendar, blah blah blah
Millions of people have predicted the end of the earth. How many have
been right?

Meanwhile, back on planet *Earth*...
While I recognize that most readers are not avid
astronomers (and some are, apparently, elementary-
school dropouts), back in February 2002 I posted a
brief summary concerning the direct very long-term
relationship between the ancient Mayan long-count
and tropical precession. Speaking in very simple
terms for anyone even casually familiar with the
Mayan calendar or basic astronomy, thus I repeat:
The Mayans carefully reckoned the haab intercalation
interval using 1508 haabs commensurate with 1507 mean
tropical years (ref. C.P. Bowditch, [c]1906). Hence
the average very-long term average value of one Mayan
tropical year equals 365.242203, infinitesimally above
modern-day averages. Thus, per the Mayan tropical year
and Mayan long-count great year, the average duration
of one precessional age is 9,360,000 solar days, which
divided by 365.242203 solar days equals approximately
25,626.8304 mean tropical years per great year. See?
Divide this result by 12, and you have the very-long
term average of about 2,135.5692 tropical years per
precessional zodiacal age. And you can bet this is an
*extremely reliable* calculation in reference to the
very long-term average of Earth's precessional year,
a.k.a. "great year" or "grand century of the Earth".
Likewise, 9,360,000 solar days divided by five equals
1,872,000 solar days per Mayan Age of the Sun, with the
first of these five ages (which begins the great year)
beginning on the winter solstice (Sun) conjoined nearly
five (5) degrees Sagittarius (ref. Aldebaran 15Tau00),
which the Mayans called the caelestial "Sacred Tree"
near the galactic center or apparent intercept of the
ecliptic and galactic planes; which is located very
nearly 3 ecliptic arcdegrees east of the galactic
center Sgr A* (exact galactic barycenter is /sgrab,
local standard of rest) about 2 degrees Sagittarius.
The present precessional "Age of the Sun" is counted
as its "Fifth" and reaches its end December 21, 2012,
on the very day of the winter solstice 11:11:23 UT,
noting the Sun at 05Sag01'12.315" in reference to
Aldebaranu 15Tau00'00.000", or less than three arc-
minutes off at 4Sag58'07.892" if we instead reference
Sgr A* as the prime fiducial precisely 02Sag00'00.000".
[ref. http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=HRO8N0QP37297.2780208333@frog.gilgamesh.org&output=gplain]
IN CONCLUSION, it is irrefutable that the ancient Mayan
calendar is, bar none, the most accurate very-long term
extant calendar in human history (and surely prehistory),
predicting the very day of the winter solstice December
21st, 2012 with uncanny -- and yet unrivaled -- accuracy.
The fact that the Mayans and other subsequent cultures
deemed the aforesaid long-term and repeating cycle of
"13 Baktun" with the vasty-longer "Sacred Tree" cycle
as being the very long-term End of the age of the ages,
or what is commonly called the "End of the (old) world",
this strongly suggests that they knew a whole lot more
about what this portends than do today's badly-educated
masses inclined to irreverence, mockery, and banishment.
Enjoy!
