When the Roman Empire collapsed there was no such thing as the state of
Israel. It was called Palestine. There is some debate as to whether the
Holy Land was ever called Israel in and around the time of Christ by
anyone other than the Jews. There seems to have been a long procession of
conquering forces that owned it before, during and after Christ's
lifetime (if he lived at all).
