Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell has asked
his fellow commissions to reverse a decision made by the agency's
enforcement bureau that OK'd U2 singer Bono's use of the F-word on
television.

As WorldNetDaily reported , the bureau ruled in October Bono did not
violate decency rules when he uttered the word on a broadcast of the
Golden Globe Awards, because he used it as an adjective.

Bono said in the January 2002 program: "This is really, really,
f------ brilliant."

"The performer used the word ... as an adjective or expletive to
emphasize an exclamation," the bureau said in its ruling, saying Bono
"did not describe sexual or excretory organs or activities."

Powell needs two other members of the five-member commission to agree
with his reversal. He circulated the proposal to his colleagues
yesterday, the Associated Press reported.

The American Family Association applauded Powell's move.

"We think this is a good first step in reigning in renegade stations
and network producers," said AFA Chairman Don Wildmon. "For too long,
they have gotten away with their warped sense of entertainment."

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have protested the fall
ruling by the FCC.

According to AP, Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., introduced a resolution
that called it the "latest salvo in a string of decisions by the
Federal Communications Commission that establishes a precedent
regarding the use of universally recognized vulgar expletives on our
nation's public airwaves."

Reps. Doug Ose, R-Calif., and Lamar Smith, R-Texas, proposed
legislation that would ban five words and three phrases from the
nation's airwaves.

Powell today also asked Congress for a tenfold increase in the amount
of fines the agency can levy against broadcasters for indecent or
obscene programming.

He said the current maximum fine of $27,500 per incident was not
enough to persuade broadcasters to watch their language, the news
service reported.

"Some of these fines are peanuts," Powell told a National Press Club
luncheon. "They're just a cost of doing business. That has to change."

That means it's okay to tell a policeman how un-fucking grateful you
are about the Force without being charged for abusive language.

I'll bet the "American Family Association" probably don't object to
the illegal war being carried out by their government, yet they get
into a tizzy about a washed-up warbler saying the word "*****". Have
they ever objected to the rightwing hatred being spewed forth on radio
by some of the 'shock jocks'?
As much as I detest this egotistical git, and the way he hob-nobs with
the rich and powerful, if it's a question of a dust-up between him and
these hypocrits I would have to back his right to say the fucking
word. Anyway the affair has been blown out of all proportion, and the
"American Family Association" should just *****.
And Bono should try to keep better company.

While I am generally a free speecher, I also prefer that language like
that not be used during prime time when the kids might be watching. I
will be the first to admit that my own language could use a good
cleaning. I however am conscience when there are children around and
do not use the language. (Except for my recent auto accident.)

I do have a problem with the apparant implication that Bono could be
fined after the fact. If he was to be fined he should have been at the
time. Since they ruled "no fine" then I do not like the thought of now
reversing it. That would flat out be wrong and against the system of
government that I thought we had here. (Can't be tried for the same
crime twice.)

Umm,

Bono was never tried. The broadcaster was the one under the scrutiny
anyway, not Bono.

You listen to any hip hop radio during the day lately?
