Until recently, I've thought USENET held a solid future on the
INTERNET. But now, I'm not so sure. Are BLOGs becoming the default
location for people to obtain information or discuss daily events --
including politics? If BLOGs are THE place to go for information and
political discussion, what useful utility would USENET offer?

My concern about BLOGs is for their nature in terms of politics.
They're most often established by someone or some group with a
particular point of view. As such, BLOGs predominantly attract
those who have compatible opinions -- compatible with those who
started and who run the BLOG. That's fine, I guess, as long as USENET
remains as a viable alternative or BLOGs become so diverse and so
easy to start up as well as make viable as it is for people to
express themselves on USENET. But I worry that the BLOGosphere will,
in a political context, simply become divided into armed camps of the
written word where opponents of a prevailing point of view don't
dare tread unless they're into getting a LOT of abuse or being kicked
off. And how much assurance will those who do not express the
prevailing opinion hold in terms of not having their posts deleted?

The beauty of unmoderated USENET newsgroups, in a political context,
is that people can post with little or no concern that their opinions
do not match a prevailing point of view or even that of major
partisans on one side or the other of a political battle. in other
words: there is still room for individuality and an unusual point of
view on USENET. Without USENET. I have to wonder where those who hold
an unusual or even centrist point of view would or could go.
