I thought they were selling arms to Iran and funneling the proceeds to

So the CIA was aware of the FDN's drug trafficking activities and did
nothing to stop it. That is a huge step from implying the CIA were
trafficking in drugs themselves. Ya gotta love those rags to riches to
rags stories though.. poor south LA boy does well, owning properties all

They didn't. There is no evidence they trafficked in drugs, only
allegations -- which the conspiracy theorists describe (falsely) as
fact. Even the original San Jose Mercury series didn't go so far as to
say the CIA was directly involved in selling drugs.

It's simply a fine way to raise money for "clandestine" operations.
Goes back to Vietnam, Air America and opium taken out of Laos and
other places.
There was nothing new and revolutionary going on with the Contras.
So much raw material, so much money to be made, such a large junkie
market that could be developed. So many governments to corrupt and
poor people to be kept under a boot.
Lovely the way the resistence to the oligarchs produced land reform
and a broadening of the economy in El Salvador. It only cost the
lives of 80,000 poor people there from 1980 - 1992.
Poor people, a bishop, a few nuns and a Catholic worker or two.

hey, sell something or print more money and watch the dollar plummet,
take your pick.. nobody ever bats an eye when we sell F15's , but
everybody knows what they'll be used for.. drugs just destroy lives

hence the knee-jerk reaction by stevie who wants to dive in front of

There's nothing like aiding and abetting activity that results in the
destruction of citizens in America and soldiers in Vietnam. How
patriotic, standing by while two waves of drug addiction sweep thru
and organized crime profits in the homeland. Then take most of the
proceeds to finance little armies in faraway places.

Lovely. Why do you suppose the cia would need to raise money selling drugs?
I mean, I'm sure they get hundreds of billions each year in play money from
the US taxpayers.
Well, they can always bank the info on their drug dealers for later
rendition when they are no longer useful to us. Noriega springs to mind ....

It's simply a fine way to raise money for "clandestine" operations.
Goes back to Vietnam, Air America and opium taken out of Laos and
other places.
Did you see that in a movie? I don't suppose you'd believe an actual
scholar instead. No, I'm sure you'd rather go on believing the worst

CIA Air Operations in Laos, 1955-1974
By William M. Leary
[excerpt] My nearly two decades of research indicate that Air America
was not involved in the drug trade. As Joseph Westermeyer, who spent
the years 1965 to 1975 in Laos as a physician, public health worker,
and researcher, wrote in Poppies, Pipes, and People: "American-owned
airlines never knowingly transported opium in or out of Laos, nor did
their American pilots ever profit from its transport. Yet every plane
in Laos undoubtedly carried opium at some time, unknown to the pilot
and his superiors--just as had virtually every pedicab, every Mekong
River sampan, and every missionary jeep between China and the Gulf of
Siam."
If the CIA was not involved in the drug trade, it did know about it.
As former DCI William Colby acknowledged, the Agency did little about
it during the 1960s, but later took action against the traders as
drugs became a problem among American troops in Vietnam. The CIA's
main focus in Laos remained on fighting the war, not on policing the
drug trade. [end excerpt]

Here's what happened while the CIA knew about the drug trade and did
nothing about it:
McCoy wrote in the book, "American involvement had gone far beyond
coincidental complicity; embassies had covered up involvement by
client governments, CIA contract airlines had carried opium, and
individual CIA agents had winked at the opium traffic. As an indirect
consequence of American involvement in the Golden Triangle until 1972,
opium production steadily increased....Southeast Asia's Golden
Triangle grew 70 percent of the world's illicit opium, supplied an
estimated 30 percent of America's heroin, and was capable of supplying
the United States with unlimited quantities of heroin for generations
to come."[3]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_W._McCoy
Growth in the Laotian opium business was directly responsible for the
explosion in heroin addiction among US troops in Vietnam in the early
70's.
Yay, CIA, we should be proud.

"Thesis" (noun) -- a hypothetical proposition put forward as a premise

Growth in the Laotian opium business was directly responsible for the

Yes, 10-15 years way too late. Long after the evidence needed to stop
it was there. Evidence in Vietnam, evidence in America.

Laughing at the CIA for not knowing everything? Do you understand the

not law enforcement. I think many of you wacky conspiracy theorists

Complicity in what, exactly? Operating a drug smuggling operation for

By your own admission it was well known that "every plane flying in
and out of Laos carrried opium at one time or another".
Again you expect us to suspend any skepticism and believe that the
CIA was oblivious to what was happening for the 20 years they were
flying out of Laos. This while use of Laotian heroin exploded in the
U.S. and by our troops on the ground in Vietnam.
Idiots in charge of the greatest intelligence agency in the world.
All this after we know they were using the same template with cocaine
and the Contras.
Neat idea. Your proxy army using CIA assets to sell drugs ("by
proxy") to raise money for all these arms that just magically show up
at staging areas in the US and elsewhere to be flown to Central
America.
In the meantime Colombian cocaine is used to create a massive crack
epidemic in America and gangs grow in power and ifluence across the
country.
Again we have idiots, oblivious to all of this, running the greatest
intelligence agency in the world.
"Idiotic" in that they didn't learn anything from their experience in
Laos. Or did they?
After Iraq patriotic Americans can no longer afford to suspend our
skepticism. No more blindly accepting the propaganda lines. No more
excuses about poor intelligence gathering. That's completely worn out
now.

Once again, you snipped someone's words in mid-sentence. The above
sentence continues, "unknown to the pilot and his superiors..." If
you're going to quote someone's words, you should have the honesty to
quote their words in context.

"...unknown to the pilot and his superiors..."

Once they realized the problem it was causing the troops in Vietnam,
they did something about it. Should they have done something about it
sooner? Sure, but that wasn't their primary mission. The CIA is not a
law enforcement agency. In fact, in most cases the CIA was
traditionally prohibited from entering into law enforcement
activities.

No, Vietnam and Laos happened before the Contras. And your conspiracy

Right. They absolutely should have done something about something they
"knew absolutely nothing about". But it wasn't their job to do law

tens of thousands of people and the maiming of hundreds of thousands
