Resident wants Congress to prevent Las Vegas pipeline plan

A White Pine County resident thinks he's got a way to stop thirsty Las
Vegas from reaching all the way to Ely for groundwater. All it would
take is an act of Congress.
65-year-old Dave Tilford says making about 500 square miles around
Great Basin National Park into a nature preserve would stop a proposal
to pump rural groundwater and pipe it 235 miles to Nevada's main city.
The 323,000 acre federal preserve he's proposing would surround the
77,000 acre national park.
It also would thwart a two billion dollar pipeline the Southern Nevada
Water Authority hopes to build to Las Vegas.
It's up to the White Pine County Commission to decide whether to send
the proposal to Washington.
A water authority spokeswoman calls it too early to say what the
implications might be.
