And a very legitimate thought at that! I read an article written by a savvy
oil industry analyst about 6 months ago. His field of expertise was the
middle east oil producers and in his article written in an investment
newsletter put foreword just that prospect. The country of Saudi Arabia has
a massive deficit and national debt in spite of its gargantuan oil revenue.
The unemployment rate is sky high and the standard of living of the average
Saudi citizen is pathetic. Social and civic unrest is brewing and internal
terrorist attacks are common place. These are usually attributed to
outsiders as the current regime will not own up to the fact they have an
internal problem. Just ask a Canadian who just spent 2 1/2 years in a Saudi
Prison under a death sentence for a bombing he had nothing to do with. The
Saudis also have a formidable military thanks to the fact that they are one
of the US largest arms customers. A significant presence in Iraq could come
in very handy in the not too distant future as an Islamic fundamentalist
revolution resembling what happened in Iran takes place. With the Saudi
military in the hand of Islamic fundies all hell is likely to break loose
and the US might have to intervene militarily in that fray.

It would have to have the backing of the army, so I'd say no.

I spent 42 months in SA in the early 1970s. In preparing to modernize and
especially to take possession of the oil fields and downstream facilities the
Saudis were sending every young man who wished to go overseas to European and
American colleges for higher education and training. I was amazed that a
medieval kingdom would take the risk. When we left i opined to a few people
that the SA government would be overthrown in about 10 years. Some of the young
men returned speaking perfect English and accustomed to uncensored news and
entertainment and so forth. Obviously i had no idea. The secret police are
highly effective in SA. Actually there was an attempt to overthrow the Saud in
the late 1960s. Some SA air force folks tried it but failed. After that only
members of the family and members of closely allied tribes were allowed to
assume sensitive command positions in the air force and they were frequently
rotated to avoid future plotting.

Most of the people in SA are appalled by the bombings by Al Qeada.

It doesn't take "most of the people" to overthrow a government.

So I guess another country will join the growing list of America
haters. Since Al Qaeada is run, sponsored, and funded by your tax
dollars.
