RIP MAXWELL SMART -- Secret Agent 86 dies at age 82......................... |
RIP Don Adams Don Adams, born Donald James Yarmy (April 13, 1923 -
September 25, 2005) was an American actor of Hungarian, Jewish and
Irish descent, best known for his role as Maxwell Smart (Agent 86) in
the TV sitcom Get Smart (1965-1970), for which he also directed and
wrote. Born in New York City, Adams won three Emmy Awards for his
portrayal of Max. He was the father of the late actress Cecily Adams.
He served with the USMC during World War II and came down with malaria
during the Battle of Guadalcanal. He worked as a comic and mimic,
taking the stage-name of Adams after marrying singer Adelaide Adams. He
changed his name from Yarmy to Adams because he got tired of being last
during alphabetical auditions. His work on television began in 1954.
After the success of Get Smart his later efforts were less successful,
including the comedy series The Partners and three attempts to revive
the Get Smart series in the 1980s. He continued to make the majority of
his income from live work on stage and in clubs.
He also worked as a voice actor. His first work was in Tennessee Tuxedo
and his Tales (1963-1966), but he was more famous as the voice of
Inspector Gadget in the initial run of that television series
(1983-1985) and the Christmas Special as well as in later reprises. He
also attempted a sitcom comeback in Canada with Check it Out! in 1985,
but the show was not successful.
He stated in interviews that his famous "clippy" voice characterization
was based on, and an exaggeration of, the speaking style of actor
William Powell.
He was married (and divorced) three times and had seven children, one
of whom, Cecily Adams, predeceased him. He died in Los Angeles,
California at the age of 82 from a sudden lung infection following a
long battle with bone lymphoma.

Could anyone (of our Era) forget the starting sequence of 'Get Smart'. Mel Brooks was a Genius
(and still is), but Don Adams was the 'Perfect Cluts' for the JOB.
Many GREAT stars followed in his 'footsteps' like Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Bill Murray and
John Ritter, but Don Adams was the first one (thanks to Mel Brooks) to combine the 'antics' of
Chaplin, The Keystone Cops and Buster Keaton (circa 1920s) to an 'acceptable' Modern Day
(circa 1960s) Television Show !!!
He will be sadly missed, BUT, "Never Forgotten".
(THANKS to Syndication - he will live on Celluloide Forever !!!).

Would U believe that Sigfried (played by the Love Boat doctor, Bernie
Koppel, was one of my fave characters in Get Smart !!
"Starker, Zis iz Kaos, ve don't "pffffffffffft" here !!!! ;-)
I also liked Max's corny oddball quotes such as "Would U believe" & his
pieste de resistance line "aaaand loving it !!!!"

Hardly anyone seemed to notice the passing of Gilligan (Bob Denver) Sept.
7th.
All that's left is the Professor and Mary Anne, I think.
Get Smart spawned a large toy industry. I watched it every week back in
the 60s when the 'secret agent' craze was at its peak. I actually had a
Kodak Instamatic toy camera (that didn't take pics), which sported a
pop-out gun barrel and handle, and fired caps!!
Barbara Feldon is still alive (Agent 99). She made me horny.

It was widely reported here. I loved both those shows, as well as my fave,
The Beverly Hillbillies...especially Granny and Jethro.

I keep thinking she died in a car accident. Looks pretty good these days
for her age.

No kidding!!! Mine broke eventually, then it was relegated to the Old Toy
Burial Ground -- the garbage can!

I remember that little thing. Didn't buy it, but remember some kid playing
with it.
