Ronnie Barker, 76, co-star of BBC's 'Two Ronnies' dies
LONDON -- British comedian Ronnie Barker, half of the long-established
and much-loved duo "The Two Ronnies," died Monday, his agent said
Tuesday. He was 76.
Agent Rosalind Chatto said Barker died after a long period of heart
trouble.
Barker had a career on the West End stage and in radio before moving
into comedy as part of the classic 1960s TV shows "The Frost Report"
and "Frost on Sunday." There he met Ronnie Corbett, and in 1971 the
pair became "The Two Ronnies." Their BBC program ran for more than 15
years.
The duo's deft wordplay, comic timing and physical incongruence --
Barker towered over Corbett -- contributed to their popularity.
"We worked together since 1965 and we never had a cross word," Corbett
said in a statement on the BBC Web site.
Born in 1929 in Bedford, near London, Barker also played the stuttering
shopkeeper Arkwright in the 1973-85 BBC show "Open All Hours."
Barker said he was most proud of his role as repeat offender Norman
Fletcher in the 1973-77 comedy series "Porridge."
Other notable deaths:
Robert Hanson, the last surviving crew member of the famed Memphis
Belle B-17 bomber that flew combat missions over Europe during World
War II, died Saturday of congestive heart failure. He was 85 and had
suffered from heart problems, family members said.
Paul Pena, a San Francisco blues guitarist who wrote one of the biggest
hits for the Steve Miller Band, has died. He was 55. Pena died Saturday
from complications of diabetes and pancreatitis. Pena was perhaps best
known for writing "Jet Airliner," a Top 10 hit in 1977.
David Case, one of the best-read actors in modern times, who performed
more than 700 books on audiotape, died Sunday at his home in El
Sobrante, Calif., north of Berkeley. He was 73.
