Rockers are urging young people to go out and vote against George W. Bush.
By Joseph Smigelski
Singers and musicians as diverse as Rickie Lee Jones and P. Diddy are
speaking out against George W. Bush and encouraging young people to go out
and vote. If successful, these rockers will inspire a record number of
young voters to cast their ballots this November, which could make all the
difference in the outcome of the presidential race because young people do
not usually turn out in force on Election Day.
Rapper and entrepreneur Sean "P. Diddy" Combs recently introduced a
campaign called "Citizen Change" designed to get the 18- to 30-year-olds
off their butts and out to their polling places. Said Combs, "The
forgotten ones will ultimately decide who the next president is. According
to the latest polls, Bush and Kerry are neck and neck. We will make the
difference. We will be the deciding factor."
Patti Smith spoke recently with USA Today about her new album, Trampin',
featuring a song called "Radio Baghdad." She said, "I'm proud of the
record and excited about it. But the thing my band and I are really going
to be focused on is encouraging people to get out there, register and
vote.. I've been speaking and marching against the Bush administration
ever since his tenure began. The present administration has confused the
American people by linking nationalism to patriotism. To me, a patriot is
someone who constantly asks questions of his government and demands
answers. Thomas Jefferson counseled us to be vigilant in watching our
government and to overturn it if it wasn't representing us properly."
Rickie Lee Jones, on her latest album, Evening of My Best Day, sings a
song called "Ugly Man." She told the New York Post that "it's definitely
about the Bushes.. They have no redeeming qualities. They're despicable..
This is the closest we've come to Nazi Germany.. They see Iraq and Iran as
a way to make money."
On April 20th of this year, Fat Wreck Chords (get the pun?) released a CD
compilation called Rock Against Bush Vol. 1 containing songs by 26 bands,
including Sum 41, The Offspring, New Found Glory, and Jello Biafra with
D.O.A. Rock Against Bush Vol. 2 will be released on August 10th, and will
feature music by more mainstream artists, such as Green Day, No Doubt,
Rancid, and Foo Fighters. Proceeds from the CDs will help pay for the cost
of this summer's Punk Voter Tour, where rockers are slamming Bush as well
as each other in the mosh pits. Other rockers are spreading the word in
concert as well. On the current Warped Tour, NOFX and Bad Religion spoke
out against Bush and encouraged voting, while fans cheered.
But not everyone is cheering. Some rockers are getting into hot water for
their anti-Bush stance. Linda Ronstadt, at a recent concert at the Aladdin
in Las Vegas, dedicated the song "Desperado" to Michael Moore, calling him
"a great American patriot . someone who is spreading the truth." She was
booed by many and then forcibly removed from the stage by the casino's
president, Bill Timmins, after the crowd got ugly. "She praised [Moore]
and all of a sudden all bedlam broke loose," said Timmins. The singer wasn
't even allowed back into her room, and she was told never to return to
the hotel.
Last year, the Dixie Chicks felt the wrath of Bush supporters when their
lives were threatened. According to a BBC article dated 24 April 2003,
"The Dixie Chicks have said they fear for their lives following the
backlash against singer Natalie Maines' comments about US President George
Bush. The band say they have received death threats after Maines told a
London audience she was ashamed that Mr. Bush came from her home state,
Texas."
The activist attitude of these performers recalls the days of John and
Yoko and their "War is over if you want it" campaign. In 1969, the song
was "Give Peace a Chance." Now the sound of protest is in the air again,
and it's beautiful music.
For more information on voting rockers, go to Punk Voter.com. As Neil
Young says, "Keep on rockin' in the free world."

California community college system. You can email Joe at

Bush and I agree on your well thought-out point... NO ONE that can't pass
the 'filter' should be allowed to vote!
It just makes life (and politics) too confusing to allow EVERYONE to
vote....
The filter:
1. No one under the age of 50 should have a vote.
2. No one with less than 10 million dollars should have a vote.
3. No one with children serving in the military should have a vote.
4. No one that disagrees with the current president should have a vote.

What does anyone listen to to decide who to vote for? Every news / media
outlet has their own particular spin added ... even tho they may not come
right out and say 'Vote for Kerry' or 'Vote for Bush', it's still there.
These 'rockers' are just another media outlet ... not much different then
Fox or the NY Times. Different target audience and different content, but
the message is in the music or their comments.
And rockers are not necessarily stupid. The lead singer from 'The
Offspring' ( they did 'Pretty Fly For A White Guy ' ) has his doctorate in
chemistry.
There's obviously the ability to go and research what a candidate did or
didn't do, but these events will be reported in either a positive or
negative light. One news outlet will think the invasion of Iraq was the
thing to do, others will say it's like Vietnam all over ... so who's right?
Some will tell you that if you listen to Fox, you've got rocks in your
head. The same goes for the NY Times.

worldly and well read as myself

LOL ... thanks.
I realize there are no absolutes in life, and what may appear to be a
negative or positive now can easily reverse polarity due to unforseen
circumstances ... for instance, getting rid of Saddam and producing a
viable democracy right in the heart of Islam can reap some tremendous long
term benefits. But that is a *long* term objective. It could've waited
until *after* Bin Laden and the bulk of Al Qaeda's financial network was
located and destroyed. Plus I'm suspect of the Admin's motives. Al Qaeda
is as much a threat today as it was Sept. 10.

Good post. It only goes to show that for every informed, aware, and vigilant
American watching out for the things that what made America great remain
true and strong, there is his or her equal opposite, dedicated to supporting
the most failed President in history, to denigrating the nation's image in
the eyes of the world, destroying the economy, and setting it upon the
precipice of utter disaster. It is 50 versus 50. No election in US history
can possibly match the importance of this upcoming one in November (...or
maybe later, as they are discussing).
Being Canadian, and knowing that what goes on down there impinges upon my
life a helluva lot more than whatever happens up here, I truly hope that
sense, reason and personal honesty prevail when it comes to marking that
ballot, however weirdly they make you do so.
The world's future truly does hang in this most delicate of balances, I have
zero doubt. Bush is, was, and always will be, an extremely dangerous idiot
with his pudgy little fingers having access to absolute terrestrial
extinction.
And, being like P.T. Barnum in nature, knowing what he knew about the
American mindset, I have decided to focus my attentions on two things:
temporary hedonistic pursuits and where I shall spend eternity upon my
demise. Unfortunately, they are at odds with each other, but the difficulty
involved is nothing compared to that of America's trying to extricate itself
from the most tangled and sticky web of death, misery and chaos it has
managed to get itself in, ever.

Rockers are urging young people to go out and vote against George W.
Bush.
By Joseph Smigelski
Singers and musicians as diverse as Rickie Lee Jones and P. Diddy are
speaking out against George W. Bush and encouraging young people to go
out
and vote. If successful, these rockers will inspire a record number of
young voters to cast their ballots this November, which could make all
the
difference in the outcome of the presidential race because young people
do
not usually turn out in force on Election Day.
But the thing my band and I are really
going
to be focused on is encouraging people to get out there, register and
vote.. I've been speaking and marching against the Bush administration
ever since his tenure began. The present administration has confused the
American people by linking nationalism to patriotism. To me, a patriot
is
someone who constantly asks questions of his government and demands
They're
despicable..
This is the closest we've come to Nazi Germany.. They see Iraq and Iran
as
a way to make money."
On April 20th of this year, Fat Wreck Chords (get the pun?) released a
CD
compilation called Rock Against Bush Vol. 1 containing songs by 26
bands,
including Sum 41, The Offspring, New Found Glory, and Jello Biafra with
D.O.A. Rock Against Bush Vol. 2 will be released on August 10th, and
will
feature music by more mainstream artists, such as Green Day, No Doubt,
Rancid, and Foo Fighters. Proceeds from the CDs will help pay for the
cost
of this summer's Punk Voter Tour, where rockers are slamming Bush as
well
as each other in the mosh pits. Other rockers are spreading the word in
concert as well. On the current Warped Tour, NOFX and Bad Religion spoke

I snipped the rest...
I don't know who you are or what fantasy world you are living in, but here
in the heartland of America, thousands of jobs have been lost and sent
overseas. I'ts always the same story, some multi-millionairre saying "by
cutting costs and perserving the dream we are helping America."
Grow up and get real. People that actually work for a living are struggling
from paycheck to paycheck, food costs more, gas costs more, housing costs
more, utilities cost more.....and the only ones who claim the economy is
good are the 5% who hold 90% of the wealth in this country.
Why don't you quit believing the bullsiht you obviously love to eat and look
at the real picture?
Millions who cannot afford heath insurance, millions who cannot afford to
buy food without assistance, millions who are wondering how to pay rent next
month...
Gee, I am glad I am not so blind and self-centered that I cannot see the
poor people in the streets, begging for a chance to hold a job for just one
day....
Tell ya what.....get out of your house, leave the dreamy fantasy world you
think you live in, and go see America. You will find half of the people in
this land struggling to make ends meet, and all of them are being fed the
same line of ***** you are eating. Difference is, they are too smart to
believe it. I'll hire you to do a real job at my place of employment. If you
pass the drug screen and background check, you have 30 days to prove your
worth....and I am NOT an easy boss to get along with. One screw up, and you
are out the door. The requirements are as follows:
At least a high school diploma.
Must be able to stand and walk for 8 hours.
Must be able to lift 100 pounds repeatedly.
Must have knowledge of plumbing, electrical, construction, painting,
sheetrock, framing, HVAC, and prove competancy in all areas.
A test will be given on knowledge of the National Fire Prevention
Association Codes, BOCA codes, NEC codes, mathematical and logical thinking,
and local and state codes. A score of at least 85% is required on all tests.
Pay starts at $8.69 an hour (this pay grade is comparable with similar jobs
within a 30 mile radius.)
It is obvious that you couldn't even explain what the NEC codes are, let
alone pass the test.
