Object: Sad loss to cricket
Anyone following the Cricket World Cup taking place in the West Indies
now, will have heard about the sudden death of Bob Woolmer.
The coach to the Pakistan team..who were eliminated from the
competition yesterday..had played some 19 Test Matches for England. He
was only 58 and one of nature's 'gentlemen'.
For many, this has cast a very long and dark shadow over the
competition. A greatly admired and respected cricketer, who lived for
the game, has gone.

He was found in his hotel room unconscious, Woodsy. A heart attack
seems the most likely cause of death. Those years, 57, 58, and 59 are
very dangerous in a male, dangerous for sudden deaths like this.
Yes WH. It was a historic win by Ireland over Pakistan. A pity really
that most of the 'Irish' players are Australians and South Africans
though. All of the non-test playing Countries taking part are mainly
composed of players with only vague ties to the Nation they represent.
Dutch players called 'Singh and 'Patel' rank alongside negro 'Irish'
with South African tribal names. It is a bit of a farce really, but
it's done to foster the game in Countries where it is less than
popular. Even America has a team..although not good enough to take
part in the tournament. The US team are based in Florida where they
consist of ex-pat West Indians.
I met Bob Woolmer a few times over the years through cricket contacts.
A really nice man.

The West Indian Police have just stated that Bob Woolmer was murdered
in his hotel room. He had been strangled.
A large, powerful man, this poses a number of questions.
Not least amongst them is the possibility of corruption within the
sport being a possible cause of his killing. The World Cup is in
turmoil over this, the Cricket World find it to be beyond
understanding.
This will reverberate for many years to come. It is devasting news
with horrific possibilities now following a horrific incident.
