Iraq enemy improving
More attacks, more effective, say U.S. sources

It's bad news coming just before the scheduled elections in Iraq – the
terrorist enemy is vastly improved in tactics and efficiency, launching more
attacks, more effectively, especially in Iraq security forces, G2B has learned.
The situation is particularly bad in the Mosul area, site of the mess hall
bombing last month.
A team sent in to investigate security after the fact was struck with the
numbers of attacks in recent weeks – attacks with mortars, rockets and
improvised explosive devices. There were more attacks and they were more
accurate and efficient than in the past, say military sources.
"Things in Mosul are beginning to make Baghdad look tame by comparison," said
one U.S. military source. "The enemy has really improved their tactics."
The attacks include the targeting of infrastructure – bridges, oil pipelines,
electricity stations.
"Baghdad is down to six hours of power a day right now," said one source. "I'm
just wondering who is directing that? It can't all be (Abu Musab) Zarqawi."
Some sources are beginning to wonder if special operations teams are being
smuggled into the country from Syria and Iran. Others think the level of
sophistication is too great for those forces to pull off and speculate that
they might be imported from former East bloc countries – or mercenaries hired
by the terrorists.
Mosul is Iraq's third-largest city. It has become a trouble spot since U.S. and
Iraqi forces launched a major offensive to retake the insurgent stronghold of
Fallujah in November. Soon after the Fallujah operation, insurgents in Mosul
attacked police stations, killing dozens of coalition troops and Iraqis
cooperating with them. The interim Iraqi government has pledged to take back
control of the city.
In the most notorious attack in the town, 20 U.S. troops were killed in in a
dining hall at a U.S. military base in December. To make things worse, last
week a U.S. plane accidentally dropped a bomb on a house near Mosul, killing
several Iraqis.
Mosul, population 2 million, is the biblical town of Ninevah, founded by
Assyrians. It was an important point on trade routes linking Asia and Europe.
Mosul is the place where Saddam Hussein's sons, Uday and Qusay, were found
hiding before U.S. troops stormed their haven, killing them both.
