unusual attitude on the part of this state upon being attacked?
Was Israel then secretly given an assurance by the US that, when
the proper time would come, Saddam would be ousted by force? Is
the current war in Iraq a direct consequence of that promise made
by the US to Israel? In any event, quatrain VIII-96 mixes and
matches the fact that Israel (the synagogue) is recognized by
many of her Arab neighbours but that Iraq (Babylon) would have
her wings clipped in a sad and miserable manner. Here it is:

Take some Peter Le Mesurier who has a different take:
Nostradamus's language is nowhere near as crude or primitive as is
often suggested by frustrated, linguistically ill-qualified
commentators (especially non-French ones). Garencieres, after all, goes
so far as to reveal (1672) that the Propheties were actually being used
in France as a standard classroom reader as late as his own boyhood
(roughly 1616).
Clearly this would not have been the case had Nostradamus's verse been
either illiterate or indecipherable. What possibly attracted the
seventeenth-century pedagogues, indeed, was the fact that it was highly
literate, and decipherable by anyone who was linguistically in the
know. That "know," however, involved a good command not only of
classical vocabulary but of classical syntax in particular. Hence the
attraction of the texts to the schoolmen. Not only did the former
seer's book encourage pupils to broaden their vocabularies with words
of classical origin, but it helped to classicize their French grammar,
too - as current custom demanded. That fashion, in fact, went back to
Nostradamus's own time.
It was in 1549, while Nostradamus was still in Italy (see Nostradamus's
Life Story), that jean Dorat's pupil Joachim du Bellay published the
ground-breaking linguistic manifesto entitled La Deffence et
Illustration de la Langue Francoyse. In this he was encouraged and
supported by the poet Ronsard,
Heavily based on earlier Renaissance models, it advocated replacing the
conventional use of Latin for many educated literary purposes with a
complete reform and reinvigoration of the French language, albeit
involving the judicious borrowing of Greek and Latin words and
constructions, together with the free imitation of great classical
writers - to say nothing of the use of allegorical references,
dialectal and technical terms, archaisms, and even rank neologisms. In
1556 an influential group of writers known as the Pleiade was formed to
promulgate these revolutionary principles.
The movement spread far and wide. In England it would be greatly
admired by Francis Bacon and would lead to the short-lived movement
known as Euphuism, after John Lyly's Euphues, The Anatomy of Wit of
1579, which was in due course even to influence Shakespeare. And
certainly the bard, in unconscious deference to the Pleiade's ideals,
would introduce large numbers of classical words into the English
language.
In France, too, the movement was to prove enormously influential,
Ronsard's whole poetic oeuvre would itself be redolent of principles.
As he himself would later put it:
Adonques pour hausser ma langue maternelle,
Indonti A labeur, je travailli pour elk,
Je fis des mots nouveaux, je rapellay Les vieux
Si bien que son renomje poussayjusquaux cieux.Jefis d'autrefacon que
n`avoient les antiques,

Le Franfois slegalla aux Romains et aux Grecs.7
But Ronsard's work was not alone in being affected. They had not only
an inner membership but many fringe enthusiasts too. Given the fact,
for example, that Ronsard himself clearly admired Nostradamus (see
Criticisms and Reviews), and that Do (the group's founding father) was
so enthusiastic about him as
send his pupil Chavigny to become his amanuensis and secret (see
Nostradamus's Life Story) - given, too, that Jodelle, another member of
the group, seems to have been so publicly critical about him - it is
quite certain that Nostradamus and the Pleiade were well aware of each
other's existence, and perhaps even in close contact.

I coined new words, recalled to life the old
Till heaven itself her name could scarcely hold.
In ways that to the ancients never dawned
I cobbled terms, poetic phrases spawned
And poetry so ordered that thenceforth

At which point it starts to appear much less odd that the see - I
should, like them, have for the most part eschewed Latin and instead
written his Propheties in French - a French, moreover, that was
positively stuffed with terms and constructions drawn straight academic
from the classics. Far from being an isolated, maverick academic- using
as he is so often portrayed, Nostradamus was in fact merely using the
linguistic technology of the moment. The only difference was that in
his case he was using it not merely to enrich the French language, but
at one and the same time to cloak his meaning from the ignorant and
uneducated - a largely accidental side-effect that nevertheless suited
his prophetic purposes down to the ground (compare his specific
quotation of the highly apposite Matthew 7: in section 2 of the Preface
a Cesar, in The Major Prophecies). All this is not to say, though, that
Nostradamus's verses were "really" in Latin or Greek, as is equally
often asserted. That would, have been entirely contrary to the founding
principles of the Pleiade. Despite one verse in Dog Latin (VI100), two
(IV.26 and IV.44) in his native Provencal and his numerous deliberate
classical importa Nostradamus's prophecies were basically written in
the 'on" French of his day. Yet there was no standard language at the
time. Not only did its spoken form vary from north to south, from
region to region, even more than it does today (compare Nostradamus in
,Context) but the written language itself had not yet been
standardized. Both authors and printers had their own preferred forms
of spelling and punctuation, and even the syntax varied from author to
author, depending largely on the degree to which they were trying to
imitate the Latin classics.
So gobbledy gook or a trap for the uneducated who have to make
something else up just to try make out they know of what, they speak.
