Managua - Former Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega has been tapped by
his Sandinista party to run for election in November, the party said
Thursday.
Ortega was president from 1984 to 1990 as leader of the Sandinista
National Liberation Front (FSLN), which had ruled since 1979. After his
defeat in 1990 elections, Ortega took the Sandinistas into opposition
and has lost two presidential bids since then.
He will run in the Central American nation's November 5 general
election to replace outgoing President Enrique Bolanos.
Opponents so far include front-runner Eduardo Montealegre, Bolanos'
choice to succeed him, and Herty Lewites, who is running as an
independent after being expelled from the FSLN.
Ortega was nominated at a Sandinista convention late Wednesday, party
officials said.
Last October, Ortega allied with the Liberal Constitutional Party (CLP)
of former president Arnoldo Aleman to lead an attempt to impeach
Bolanos, who won the presidency on the CLP ticket but fell out with the
party.
