Hurricanes on the west coast are exceedingly rare! Most Pacific ocean
hurricane-type storms are called typhoons or cyclones (the last is really a
generic term for a circular storm). Does anyone know why they are called
different things in different oceans? Is it just arbitrary?

A "cyclone" is , as you say, ANY low pressure system (high pressure ones
being "anticyclones" - in the northern hemisphere at least)
The different names come form different regional languages as one might
expect- "Hurricane" is a Carib word (unsurprising when you think where the
Atlantic storms originate). "Typhoon" has a fascinating etymology, the word
exists in greek, arabic, perisan, hindi and chinese (where it arose
independently!) http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=typhoon

Atlantic and eastern Pacific it's hurricane, western Pacific is typhoon,
and southern hemisphere is cyclone.

Oh, and one correction...
Hurricanes hitting the west coast of the US are rare,
they hit the west coast of Mexico quite often.

Ahhhh! I suppose they don't get as much publicity as they do when they hit
the US...

They do if you LIVE here (San Diego).
Even when they don't hit here directly,
they often bring heavy rain, so we do watch them.

It's currently on track to hit Central America, where it may carry over
into the Carribean and strengthen again. In all likelihood it will
break down as it crosses the mountains, but one never knows. Even the
fact that it has gotten this far is an extraordinary event. Me thinks
strange weather events like this will become more common in the 21st
century.
