Soldier charged
US Army private Lynndie England, shown in photographs smiling and
pointing at naked Iraqi prisoners, has been charged by the military
with assaulting the detainees and conspiring to mistreat them.
England (21) faces four allegations, according to a statement early
today from the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Six soldiers have already been charged with crimes in connection with
the abuse of Iraqi prisoners.

The prisoner abuse, which took place during parts of last November and
December, was stopped in January. The soldiers involved have all been
confined to a base in the US pending the investigations. After initial
investigations, the charges were brought forward in March. Before a
charge can be brought to court martial, there is a pre-trial hearing.
Now that all of those conditions have been met, the first court
martial is scheduled for May 19.
