Second spill hits Chinese
26nov05
HARBIN - Just days after a 100-tonne spill of toxic benzene caused a
public health crisis, a second chemical plant explosion has been
reported in China.
Schools closed and thousands of people were evacuated in southwest
Chongqing after a blast at the Yingte Chemical Company.
Local residents were warned not to drink or use water from a nearby
river because it may have been polluted with cancer-causing benzene
from the factory.
The new poison warning came as China scrambled to control an earlier
huge spill hundreds of kilometres to the northeast, in Harbin.
Russia declared an emergency as the toxic slick headed its way.
In Harbin, water supplies have been turned off and hundreds of
villagers evacuated from along the Songhua river after an explosion on
November 13 at a petrochemical plant dumped 100 tonnes of toxic
chemicals in the water. In a sign of how the spill has jarred national
nerves about widespread pollution, Premier Wen Jiabao issued
instructions demanding safe drinking water be ensured.
Hospitals have stockpiled antidotes to benzene-related poisoning.
Officials warned residents to be on the lookout for symptoms of
poisoning, which can cause leukemia, anaemia, other blood disorders and
kidney and liver damage.
Heilongjiang Governor Zhang Zuoji ordered hospitals to brace for
possible cases of poisoning and promised to drink the first water from
city taps once the pollution passes.
Regions of Russia are next in the path of the spill.
A state of emergency has been declared in the region of Khabarovsk in
Russia's Far East as the 80km toxic slick was expected to reach there
within days.
The Songhua feeds into the Heilong River, known as the Amur in Russia,
which is the main source of drinking water for more than 1.5 million
inhabitants in Khabarovsk province.
