Article: Sects unite to battle Al Qaeda in Iraq
Sunnis and Shiites work together at the local level to protect their
neighborhoods from insurgents and militias.

QARGHULIA, Iraq -- Despite persistent sectarian tensions in the Iraqi
government, war-weary Sunnis and Shiites are joining hands at the
local level to protect their communities from militants on both sides,
U.S. military officials say.
In the last two months, a U.S.-backed policing movement called
Concerned Citizens, launched last year in Sunni-dominated Anbar
province under the banner of the Awakening movement, has spread
rapidly into the mixed Iraqi heartland.
Of the nearly 70,000 Iraqi men in the Awakening movement, started by
Sunni Muslim sheiks who turned their followers against Al Qaeda in
Iraq, there are now more in Baghdad and its environs than anywhere
else, and a growing number of those are Shiite Muslims.
Commanders in the field think they have tapped into a genuine public
expression of reconciliation that has outpaced the elected
government's progress on mending the sectarian rift.
"What you find is these people have lived together for decades with no
problem until the terrorists arrived and tried to instigate the
problem," said Lt. Col. Valery Keaveny, commander of the 3rd
Battalion, 509th Airborne unit in the Iskandariya area south of
Baghdad. "So they are perfectly willing to work together to keep the
terrorists out."
As late as this summer, there were no Shiites in the community
policing groups. Today, there are about 15,000 in 24 all-Shiite groups
and 18 mixed groups, senior U.S. military officials say. More are
joining daily.
Here in Qarghulia, a rural community east of Baghdad, the results are
palpable. Killings are down dramatically and public confidence is
reviving.
"Sunnis-Shiites, no problem," said Obede Ali Hussein, 22, who stood at
a checkpoint built by the U.S. Army along the Diyala River. "We want
to protect our neighborhood." [end excerpt]

I missed portions of the original airing. It's clear that Sunni
insurgents have turned against Al Queda terrorists. It's stupid but
perhaps effect propaganda to toss both groups into the "terrorist"
category. But the situation is fluid and well outside our control
still. Nobody is certain that this won't end in a bloodbath yet.
Nobody anticipated the bloodbath there when our chickenhawk leaders
ran the invasion in '03. People are going to play hell trying to
justify the death, destruction and the potential for further violence
that Bush/Cheny/Rumsfeld, et al created with what they thought was
going to be a walk in the sun.
The right wing ideologues aren't going to get a free pass on all the
mess that was created simply because the current rates of violence are
down.

What do we people call idiots that fail to rightly anticipate Sunni
objections to the forceful alteration of the political order in Iraq?
The Bush Administration.
What do people call one of the participants in the bombing of the King

Like ignoring Eric Shinseki's warning about post invasion troop

There was a ton of optimism going around in the spring of '03.

QARGHULIA, Iraq -- Despite persistent sectarian tensions in the Iraqi

In the last two months, a U.S.-backed policing movement called

If you consider Saddam's torture chambers and rape rooms fine, so be
it. If you consider Saddam's mass graves, filled with hundreds of
thousands of Iraqis, so be it. If you consider 5000 children per month
dying due to UN sanctions imposed on Iraq (because of Saddam), so be
it. If you consider children being tortured while their parents were
forced to watch, so be it. If you consider women being gang raped
while their husbands were forced to watch, so be it. Yep, sounds like
a "fine" place, doesn't it?
You'de think the insurgants 'started' the trouble. Amazing!
The majority of the Iraqi people voted in the national elections, even
while being threatened by insurgents who wanted to thwart the Iraqi
people from voting for their representative government. You might
remember all those Iraqis holding up their purple ink stained fingers
to show they had voted, even while being threatened with death by
insurgents (terrorists).
Anyway, maybe these people are protecting their neighbourhoods from

Article: Sects unite to battle Al Qaeda in Iraq
Sunnis and Shiites work together at the local level to protect their
neighborhoods from insurgents and militias.

November 19, 2007
QARGHULIA, Iraq -- Despite persistent sectarian tensions in the Iraqi
government, war-weary Sunnis and Shiites are joining hands at the
local level to protect their communities from militants on both sides,=
U.S. military officials say.
"What you find is these people have lived together for decades with no=
problem until the terrorists arrived and tried to instigate the
problem," said Lt. Col. Valery Keaveny, commander of the 3rd
Battalion, 509th Airborne unit in the Iskandariya area south of
Baghdad. "So they are perfectly willing to work together to keep the
terrorists out."
As late as this summer, there were no Shiites in the community
policing groups. Today, there are about 15,000 in 24 all-Shiite groups=
and 18 mixed groups, senior U.S. military officials say. More are
joining daily.
Here in Qarghulia, a rural community east of Baghdad, the results are
palpable. Killings are down dramatically and public confidence is
reviving.
"Sunnis-Shiites, no problem," said Obede Ali Hussein, 22, who stood at=
a checkpoint built by the U.S. Army along the Diyala River. "We want
to protect our neighborhood." [end excerpt]

Iraq was fine until the yanks and Brits invaded the fuckin' place.
If you consider Saddam's torture chambers and rape rooms fine, so be
it.
American torture chambers are better then?
If you consider Saddam's mass graves, filled with hundreds of
thousands of Iraqis, so be it.
As opposed to the up towards a million dead since the yanks
invaded...and two, (at least), million on the move...refugees. Better
eh?
If you consider 5000 children per month
dying due to UN sanctions imposed on Iraq (because of Saddam), so be
it.
Because of America you twat! Americans were killing children by
sanctions in order to make Saddam suffer. What kind of logic is that?
If you consider children being tortured while their parents were
forced to watch, so be it.
Really? How many. Post some evidence!
If you consider women being gang raped
while their husbands were forced to watch, so be it. Yep, sounds like
a "fine" place, doesn't it?
Men being humiliated by male and female American facists is less of a
crime is it douglas?
You'de think the insurgants 'started' the trouble. Amazing!
The majority of the Iraqi people voted in the national elections, even
while being threatened by insurgents who wanted to thwart the Iraqi
people from voting for their representative government. You might
remember all those Iraqis holding up their purple ink stained fingers
to show they had voted, even while being threatened with death by
insurgents (terrorists).
Oh *****...haven't you bought a new record yet? This one has a
scratch on it. Tell me something new for *****-sakes to try and
convince me that you're right. This old argument has been bunked and
debunked a million times since it first surfaced years ago.
Anyway, maybe these people are protecting their neighbourhoods from
whatever you want to call the insurgants right now...
Terrorists.
Oppose American occupation of your country and robbing your natural
resources and you're a terrorist...hmmm!
but what happens when the seppos want to influence them?
Will they throw roses on the ground in front of you as you
walk? I think not.Don't get all goosey goosey douglas and
your idiot friend voice of whatever...this is not the result
of anything American.
So what? I don't care that it's not the result of anything American.
The result itself is all that matters.
Well don't use it as some kind of boast then. Which you did with the
first post in this thread. Americans are making NO, (*****-all),
'progress' in Iraq. It's getting worse and worse and will continue to
do so till you thieving bastards are bombed and/or shot out of it.
The Iraqi's still want you bastards out
away from their oil despite any concerned citizens.
The oil belongs to the Iraqi people. It has belonged to the Iraqi
people since Saddam was removed from power. Prior to that, the oil
belonged to him.- D=F6lj citerad text -

I think we already knew this is how the neocons think.
You're very confused, aren't you?
That seems to be the norm for most in this group.
No, some of them so consciously hate their own country that they know
exactly what they're doing.
Lord God, Steven.. how many times do I have to repeatedly tell you
that we do no hate our country; we hate what has *happened* to our
country and we want it back!
Is that so hard for you to understand?
And PS: it's Thanksgiving tomorrow - smile a little, lighten up .. ;)
Really - have a good Thanksgiving, Steven.

Well, Stevie mistakenly thinks that not liking the hypocrisy, corruption,
lying, greed, self-centeredness, stupidity, conformity, corporate whoring,
egotism, nationalistic fanaticism, religious extremism that permeates all
levels of government in the US are reasons the Left *hates* thc creed of
this nation, the Constitution. To the contrary, the Left upholds the
Constitutional rights of every individual. And it is that creed that is the
essence of the United States of America. That piece of paper, the Bill of
Rights, and the Declaration are what separates the USA from so many other
empires before us which were tyrannical and gave citizens few rights.
However, what is said on paper and the actual conversion of idealogy to
everyday reality are obviously not well matched at all. Human misbehavioral
traits typically make a mess out of the idealistic ideas we support.
The AcornHead has trouble understanding that it is most often our
realization that Constitutional laws that are violated by that
misbehaviour, result in oppression, repression, and suppression of the human
mind, spirit, and lifestyle. And it is historically the right-wing which
trespasses on those laws.
When left-wingers say they 'hate' the US government they most often mean
they hate the violations of our constitutional liberties by corrupted,
tyrannical, uncaring, lying, stupid leaders. There are some checks and
balances, yes, but still there are violations, as we've seen during the Bush
administration with our privacy rights.
It's hard to LOVE the government when it doesn't adhere to the creed of the
land. I don't equate not loving adminstrators' policies and interpretations
and opinions with being unpatriotic. We are advised by our founding fathers
to question our leaders, punish or remove them if they break their oath of
office, address our 'grievances' in peaceful public assembly, etc. -- NOT
merely accept that they are *right* and we are wrong for opposing them, or
unpatriotic for doing so.
Additionally, the Left doesn't like the crass corporate manipulation of our
daily lives to make obscene profits at the expense of our mental and
physical health, our environment, and our rights, especially privacy. The
collusion between the corporate and governmental world is well documented.
Even Ike Eisenhower had warned against this collusion way back in 1960.
Since then, it has established a firm grip on the American landscape.
Elections, for example, have increasingly become a media-piloted project
where small secondary parties and platforms are dismissed for lack of money
and attention. Two major parties dominate the landscape, and the media
whores for both of them, and all the corporate monies funneled into their
media companies (that support the parties' candidates, as well).
Finally, the efforts of right-wing religious fanatics to pollute the
political-legal mechanisms with their wild ideas of end-time prophecies,
hell and damnation, varying misinterpretations of current social trends,
efforts to censor, repress sexually, dominate ideologically, persecute
minorities, etc., keep gravely threatening the rights guaranteed under our
national creed. A theocracy isn't what most Americans want.
So, the constant issue of the Left, as the AcornHead so unfairly simplifies
it, of 'hating' the USA is aimed at these violations and violators. The
futility that they feel in trying to get these corrosive influences subdued
usually results in some overreactive opining, but their heart is in the
right place: they want to protect the Constitution from the erosion caused
by human misbehaviour. Dani, you as a mental health professional, are well
aware of that negative persistent misbehaviour and likely understand that,
in the real world (not the one the AcornHead lives in), citizens have to
keep fighting against those who threaten the well-being of others, while
upholding their right to oppose (to a reasonable, lawful point).
The AcornHead likes to think of America as a flawed but eminently morally
superior empire that has a 'manifest destiny' to fulfill -- at any cost.
That cost currently is the futile, unnecessary war Bush got the USA mired
in. He'd prefer to believe every war we fight must've had a good, even
godly, purpose even in the face of overwhelming evidence it did not.
The AcornHead is an example of a frustrated purist, politically, socially,
morally, spiritually, that takes his anger out on the Left for what is
essentially are other patriotic citizens who support the Constitution,
rather than support lying, war-mongering, egotistical, fanatical leaders
that spit on it, use our lives like shitrags for their wars, and strut
around as though support for their policies or even personalities is akin to
being patriotic, even *evil*. LOL!
