CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) _ Seven students were arrested Friday after two
groups of girls fought at a city high school.
The fight, which involved a group of black and Hispanic girls and
another group from the Dominican Republic, broke out around 1:30 p.m.
in the cafeteria at Woodrow Wilson High School, the Courier-Post of
Cherry Hill reported.
It was not immediately known what sparked the fight, which occurred
during a study hall period, but no serious injuries were reported.
Five girls and two boys, whose names were not released, were arrested
inside the school and charged with either improper behavior or simple
assault. They were taken to police headquarters and later released into
the custody of their parents or guardians.
Numerous police officers responded to the scene and, with the help of
building administrators, were able to quell the fight and disperse the
crowd. The scene was declared under control about 2:30 p.m., although
additional fights broke out in a nearby park and other areas near the
school.
None of the youths involved in those fights were arrested, authorities
said.
In response to the brawl, district officials said the high school would
hold a delayed opening on Monday. A public meeting was scheduled before
the start of the school day so community members could discuss the
incident with district officials, followed by a private session for
parents of the students involved in the brawl.
