Sheriff concerned about violence, plans volunteer patrol

BY BILL HESS
Herald/Review

BISBEE - Sheriff Larry Dever said Thursday that illegal

immigrants

are becoming more brazen putting the lives of Cochise County
residents in jeopardy.

An extreme example of how dangerous the border situation has

become

is a Thursday morning carjacking, during which a woman and her
daughter were assaulted at their residence by three Mexican
nationals who illegally entered the United States, Dever said.

"They (illegal immigrants) are more desperate and obviously they
don't care about American citizens," he said.

Dever said some illegal immigrants are showing up at school bus
stops, and his deputies are patrolling those in rural areas near
the border to make sure nothing happens.

The sheriff said a group of volunteers is needed to work with the
deputies to keep on eye on school bus stops.

His department is working to set up such a program.

"It's still in its infant stage," Dever said.

Citizen complaints about problems involving illegal immigrants

have

increased, although the sheriff said he could not put a

percentage

of the increase.

He said the increase in complaints are tied to the upward trend

of

more illegal immigrants crossing the border into the United

States

through Cochise County.

Deputies also are finding larger groups of illegal immigrants.

That's an understatement. I've heard the border looks like
the opening gun at the boston marathon.

"Now there are 30, 40 or 50 in a group," Dever said.

A couple of years ago, groups ranged from six to 10 people, he
said.

Their situation is probably desperate in mexico. I still say
someone who can barely add and can't speak english doesn't
really threaten my job.

Your job? What is your job?

My job involves doing math and speaking english.

There are plenty of other naturalized US
citizens who can barely read and do math (and speak proper English)
whose jobs are being threatened by these immigrants. Destroy the
unskilled or semi skilled labor market for naturalized citizens, or
people who feel they have been here for a long time, by driving down
wages and causing migrant competition tom ake these jobs even harder
to come by, and you have an excellent recipe for crime, extremism,
riots, and eventually civil war.

Hire immigrants and the business MAY suffer from the
unskilled worker.
Hire immigrants and the unskilled worker who is a long term US citizen
will suffer from the generally decreased wages and increased job
competition for these jobs susposedly "no one wants" that migrants
workers will create.
Don't legalize the immigrants
and the business WILL DEFINITELY suffer from the large
fines imposed by the fed for hiring illegal immigrants.
The decision to hire should be made by the business.
Legalizing the immigrants takes the decision to hire away
from the federal gov't.
Businesses should not be conducting illegal hiring practices for the
sake of cheaper labor. But the feds do not enforce immigrations laws
enough anyway.
You're a republican, arnold, you
should agree with this (or is all that talk of 'less gov't'
just cover for some other agenda?)
No I am not a republican. I am a conservative in the Jeffersonian
sense. I guess if I would sum up my political beliefs, I would do so
with this statement:
"If they get rid of the motto 'In God We Trust', and I hope we do,
they should replace it with the statement 'Mind Your Own Business',
which was the US motto before the constitution"

This civil strife will first be
expressed through gang warfare, between Latino (esp. Mexican), and
African American gangs in the urban centers, and the troubles caused
by reactionary militia and border vigilante groups elsewhere.

The only rioting and strife I see right now is the republicans.
Yes. The republican party will probably split over this issue.
So you're saying these immigrants who will get jobs will use
their lunch break to start a gang war in the city center? What
planet are you on?
No. I am saying that long term citizens who make uo the unskilled
sector of the labor force could take up xenophobic sentiments in the
face of large immigrant influxes created by Bush's amnesty. They may
end up dealing with decreased wages in general and increased
competition for unskilled labor jobs caused by these migrants. Other
ways that they may respond to these demographic and economic
dislocations is through crime, gang membership, and racial extremism.
Bush's amnesty will also encourage more migrants to come to the US,
until a point is reached where the unskilled job market cannot
accomodate the rate of immigrant influxes. These migrants will also
find themselves drawn to crime, gangs, and extremism. This will be
true especially in the face of xenophobic sentiments from multi
generational Americans and hostile law enforcement becoming even more
hotile in an increasingly decreasing domestic security environment.
The point will also be reached when these migrants will also be
saying, "we cannot adequately support ourselves at these wages!" The
beginning of poltical activism which could lead to Chicano "autonomy"
or separatist politics.
This is no 'lunch break'. This is a exploitation ticket to self
destruction.

This
will escalate into 80's South African style riots and also Northern
Ireland type urban secretarian guerilla conflict as these gangs start
to paramilitarize. If you live here, your job will be threatened then,
whatever it is. Mexican separatism will begin to emerge when we start
hearing for more public services and more slack on immigration
controls from migrant groups as well as higher wages, with accusations
of exploitation and lack of protection from xenophobic elements and
biased law enforcement. The radical migrant/Latino labor union and
their elected local officials may well emerge as the vehicle of
focusing to politically drive the separatist movement,

Spare me the speculation. The last time a separatist movement
got going in this country was 130 years ago when the white
plantation owners wanted to keep black slaves to work their
farms.
They wanted to keep their cheap labor. Ironic how cheap labor could be
the cause of the 2nd civil war.
I hope, however, this will be the last one.
But

wheras the
paramilitarized gang will be the militant means. Whatever the case
will be, drug trafficking groups, leftist political factions,

Yes, I'm all for the left forming political parties.
So am I, as long as they do not advocate subversive anti American
ideas.

and
Mexican racist groups like the voice of aztlan will expoit this
situation to their advantage. Going to work for millions of middle or
upper class Americans will be much more threatening then.

Give it 20 years.

In 20 years, those immigrants will have formed a family with
children who serve in the US armed forces, first generation
americans. A manager at my work facility is a mexican national
who came to the US as a youth in his 20's and served in the
US military with distinction for over 20 years.
Sucess and loyalty. I hope also this is the case for the vast majority
of migrants.
