Fighting in Iraq escalated today as Shiite Muslims took control of parts of
three cities and insurgents kidnapped foreigners from Japan, South Korea and
Jerusalem.
A U.S. Marine was killed in a battle to control Fallujah, while followers of
Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr took full control of the city of Kut and held
part of Najaf, the Associated Press reported. Insurgents also controlled part
of the town of Kufa, residents said.
Captors who hold Japanese hostages were shown on Al-Jazeera TV with rifles and
swords, threatening to "burn them alive" if Tokyo did not remove its troops
from Iraq. The kidnappings are a new tactic used to try to pressure nations
allied with the United States.
According to the Japanese news agency Kyodo, the kidnapped civilians include
two male journalists and a female aid worker. A Japanese official said there
was "no reason" to withdraw troops from Iraq.
Though Ukrainian troops were forced to leave their bases in Kut yesterday, U.S.
Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez said the city would be retaken by coalition
forces "imminently," AP reported.
According to the report, Sanchez said hundreds of thousands of Shiites who
traveled to Najaf for weekend religious ceremonies prevented coalition forces
from taking action against insurgents there.
"We are very cognizant of the religious ceremonies," he said.
Sanchez denied the U.S. was mired a quagmire in Iraq.
"I don't see any shadows of Vietnam in Iraq," Sanchez told a news conference.
The city of Karbala, south of Baghdad, was the site of additional fighting as
Polish and Bulgarian troops drove off Shiites near the municipal hall.
Coalition forces suffered no casualties in the overnight battle, AP reported.
U.S. Marines fought insurgents in Fallujah for a second day, using helicopters
against a mosque being used by militants as a base.
Fighting in Iraq this week has left 36 Americans dead, while at least 459
Iraqis have been killed, mostly in Fallujah.
AP reported the Japanese hostages were taken by a group identifying itself as
the "Mujahedeen Squadrons," which Al-Jazeera said gave a three-day ultimatum
for Japan to announce a troop withdrawal or the civilians would be killed.
"We tell you that three of your children have fallen prisoner in our hands and
we give you two options -- withdraw your forces from our country and go home or
we will burn them alive and feed them to the fighters," the group said.
Shiite forces detained two South Koreans aid workers earlier this week, but
they were later released unharmed.
The third kidnapping involved two Arab residents of Jerusalem, Israeli media
reported. It was unclear if the two, who were kidnapped today, were Israeli
citizens.
