Sixty years ago today, in Budapest (Hungary), disappeared from
the face of the Earth a most remarkable man, Raoul Wallenberg.
*
He was a Swedish diplomat posted in Hungary who had used all of
his efforts to save the lives of up to 100,000 Hungarian Jews. By
providing many with Swedish consular documents, by taking many
from the trains which were to carry them to the death camps, by
scaring the ***** out of the Nazi who was to carry out the order
of eliminating the Budapest Ghetto, threatening him with war
crimes if he did so, and in many other ways, Raoul Wallenberg
earned his place in history.
*
On January 17, 1945, as he was going to meet a high-ranking
Soviet commander, then occupying Hungary, Raoul Wallenberg
disappeared.
*
When I first read quatrain III-58, its last line rang a bell:
*
Qu'on ne saura qu'il sera deuenu.
*
It was a clue, a simple, clear clue: 'one would never know what
would have happened to him.' The rest of the poem mentions the
ancient name for Hungarians, Pannoniques. Another clue. Even
though his name is never mentioned and despite the fact that
January 1945 is nowhere to be found, these two clues appeared to
be too odd not to suggest the disappearance of Raoul Wallenberg.
*
But I had no way of confirming it. It was one interpretation
amongst many others. A matter of opinion, some would say.
*
In 1994, when it finally dawned on me that these poems were an
encyphered poetry hiding a clear text in prose, quatrain III-58
was one of the first to 'suffer the torture' of the cryptic
anagram. Here is the quatrain, followed by its decyphered text in
prose:
*
----------------- C E N T V R I E__T I E R C E. --------------
----------------------- (édition de 1555) --------------------
*
---- 58 - Aupres du Rin des montaignes Noriques --------------
--------- Naistra vn grand de gents trop tart venu, ----------
--------- Qui defendra S A V R O M E & Pannoniques, ---------
--------- Qu'on ne saura qu'il sera deuenu. ------------------
*
The decyphered text confirmed the interpretation:
*
--------- Quand vn Suédois prénommé Raoul vient --------------
--------- en Hongrie sauver tant de Gens (avant --------------
--------- Ianvier Quarante Cinq) des SS d'Europe, ------------
--------- on ne sçaura ce qu'il sera deuenu. -----------------
*
Who, when, where, what, everything is there. In modern English,
with words no longer spelled or used thus within asterisks, here
is what it says: 'When *a* Swede first-named Raoul comes to
Hungary to save so many People (before *Ianuary* Forty Five) from
Europe's SS, one shall not *know* what would have become of him.'
*
Clever, eh, this Nostradamus?!
