Tomorrow (well technically today because it's 28 minutes after
midnight) ..I'm on my way to Ireland. I am scared outta my mind about
the plane ride. My God. Oh the dread. And it's not because I'm
worried about terrorists this time, it's because I can't *stand* the
fact that I cannot get off that plane until it lands. Freaks me right
out. I *have* to stay on the plane.. can't leave at my will. To me
it's like being inside a locked room until I know someone will
eventually let me out (but every minute is like an hour) .. It's not
so much even being in the air or over an ocean - it's the confinment.
Ahhh.. so I'm trying to stay up all night so I will be so exhausted
that I will sleep throughout the entire plane ride. I'm gonna try to
stay up all night. So unGodly nervous that I probably would anyway.
But I am so excited about going to Europe. It's such an intriguing
thing for me to discover new cultures and different land. It's more
of an interesting learning experiance to me than fun. If I wanted
only fun I would vacation at a beach and lay there working on my tan
day after day. No, this will be fun but it's moreso to see (part) of
my world. Some people never get this chance; never will they see
other parts of their world - either by ignorant choice or by
circumstance. I feel very lucky that I have this oppurtunity.
So yeah - got the jitters big time. But I'm doing it.
Thanks Krib and Ricky and Amy and Tom for answering my questions,
offering advice and talking to me about it. Maybe I should wear a
name tag with big bright bold colors: DANI ..so if you happen to see
me you'll know it's me .. :)
Amsterdam is going to be a trip, man. I've wanted to get a tattoo on
my lower back for the longest time but I've always backed out (another
thing I can't get out of at my will - once they start that tattoo you
either wait until they're finished, or you've got one pretty fucked-up
looking "art" on your body LOL! The only body art I have is a belly
button piercing. But I figure Amsterdam is the place to go wild, so
I'll get it done there.
And Paris.. all I gotta say is wow. And Ireland - I get to see my
roots. And England.. "royalty" .. :) A little girls dream of the
princes and castles and "Knights in shining armour" .. Plus I love the
Beatles. Italy has been taken off the itinerary :( I'll wait until I
can spend more time there; take out a whole vacation at some point or
another solely for Italy.
I am a little concerned about the anti-Americanism.. people "hating"
me simply because I live in America. I've never been on the receiving
end of prejudice. I'm cool though.. I can hang with any bunch (lot)
and make friends wherever I go.
It's now 1:04 am.. gotta stay up.

Best move. Or immerse yourself in the inflight entertainment..

Excellent attitude you have there, it does us all good to remind ourselves
how lucky we are on occasion.

Hope you're not too dissapointed! Don't expect to see too many knights in
shining armour (unless your idea of a knight is a skinhead Special Branch
policeman and you regard blue anti-stab vests as shining..)
I am a little concerned about the anti-Americanism.. people "hating"

I would say that is pretty unlikely. As long as you're not swaggereing about
saying " we saved yer asses, now speak English to me dammit!" and acting
like you own the place you will encounter no hostility. Same as if I went
over to the states and started calling you all backwards colonial rednecks!
A little respect for the locals and awareness of your guest status goes a
long way, as I'm sure you're aware already.
Once again, enjoy your trip!

Heya Dani, I hope this catches you before you leave ;)
The claustrophia on the flight? Yes, I know that problem and it's a
common one. The truth is, there is more mental anguish just thinking
about it before the flight, than there is whilst you are travelling.
If you can, just think of nicer things. I give you 100% assurance that
when you are flying, all will be well..that feeling will pass with
familiarity and the airline staff on board are always very helpful ;)
Europe is warm right now, and this is a good time to have tbe best of
the weather.
Don't even think for a second about any anti-Americanism. It's all
about people. Just be you, and no matter what your nationality is, you
will be welcome and find friends. You won't encounter any sign of
anti-Americanism in Europe. We tend to rather judge people on their
qualities, not their home Countries :)
The tattoo? Hey, I did that a couple of years ago ;) A cobra's head on
my forearm. Again, don't worry...it's not that bad ;) I'll bet that
the artist offers you a 'special' cigarette or two whilst he's working
;)
Dani...This is right for you, and you will never forget it. All that
remains is to enjoy it. I guarantee you will profit greatly by the
experience.
So....knock 'em dead girl....bon voyage. Ricky

Wear a John F. Kerry badge and they'll fall at your feet.. :) -
Seriously, I'd
be rather surprised if you came across any prejudice. When in in
France I usually say I'm Irish (1,000 years of enmity :).. they can't
generally distinguish different English accents.
Bon-voyage.

You'll be OK... just don't go proclaiming that America is sooo much
better than where you are... infact you'll probably find that people
will warm to you if you're honest with them about how you feel regarding
your country's current affairs...
BON VOYAGE!!!

Right, don't be proud of your nation, only stinky Euro's can do that.

There's a difference between being proud of your nation and going around
telling everyone it's way better than where they live, Tony.

Seeing as you've never left North America you aren't REALLY in a position to
judge, are you?
Sheesh.

He just means don't be obnoxious about it. It's usually the obnoxious,
self-righteous, intolerant attitude that annoys people, not citizenship or
religion.

Go for your holiday and enjoy it.
Jean must be on holidays too or in rehab since I note he's been pretty
quiet this past week.
But we've still got McDonald here to defend the faith and I'm sure the
flame retardent suit will fit him just fine.
