The Comet McNaught has made cometary history and is truly a spectacular
comet. Reports that it is the brightest since 1965 are accurate in most
quarters, depending on where the observer is, and viewing conditions.
I've not seen it myself, so the photos are most appreciated. I don't know
why, by a stunningly beautiful comet like this one gives me an eerie,
liberating feeling...one of timelessness, eternity, fate. It's weird, but
the comet comes along at a time of sharply mounting war tensions in the
Middle East, a falling administration in the US, and follows a long period
of generally mounting tensions between East and West for the past five
years or so. It may only be a coincidence, but it is a remarkable one, and
a memorable one, too. Whatever happens in the coming weeks and months, I
will always distinctly remember images of this great comet as being a
strange 'marker' of the times.
I saw Hale-Bopp in 1997, both by naked eye and binoculars, and it was
beautiful, like an arc welder's torch, with an undulating long tail. Yet,
it's obvious the McNaught comet has exceeded it greatly.
It was the Hale-Bopp comet that motivated a group of UFO cultists to
commit group suicide.
There is something undefinable about the feeling it imparts to me -- I am
unable to understand why seeing the pictures gives me such emotional
reactions.
