TALLAHASSEE -- A group of 30 military veterans critical of the war in
Iraq hoped to use Tuesday's Veterans Day parade to call attention to
the increasingly deadly conflict but instead found themselves fighting
for something much more fundamental.
Members of Veterans For Peace and Vietnam Veterans Against the War
were yanked off a downtown Tallahassee street, directly in front of
the Old Capitol, while marching in the holiday parade they had
legitimately registered in.
As organizers allowed the parade to roll on -- including veterans from
various wars, several high school marching bands and even a group of
young women from the local Hooters restaurant -- the anti-war veterans
were ordered onto sidewalks where they passed out leaflets and
displayed a banner reading, "Honor the Warrior, Not the War."
"There's a war going on that's based on lies, just like Vietnam," said
veteran Tom Baxter, an Army equipment maintenance officer in Vietnam
for 16 months in 1967-69. "They were lying then, and they're lying
now."
Parade chairman Ken Conroy, a Korean War veteran, said he ejected the
anti-war veterans because they were offensive and because Tallahassee
police also wanted them removed. He offered to refund their $10
registration fee and said he was not suppressing the group's free
speech rights.

Good for them! This was a parade to honor vets.
There are other times more appropriate for that garbage.

First of all......I have to laugh at your name every time I see it.
Funny!
Are you advertising that you have big boobs, you like big boobs or you
are a big boob? Just was wondering....
And second....
What is wrong with VETS of all people, marching in a parade for VETS?
They served for us as well and have a right to not be sensored just
because their message rubbed a few people the wrong way.
Maybe they are trying to spread this message so that the VETS of this
war aren't treated like garbage as they were when they return. And once
again, they were treated like garbage and not honored VETS.
You can support the troops without supporting the war. That is what
America is all about.......FREEDOM.
Do you want to join those who want to take our freedom away? Do you
think VV's should be treated like garbage?

own.
You can choose that "you're with us" or you can choose "you're against us".
Isn't FREEDOM a great state of mind Soozie?

Using a parade to honor veterans to promote another cause, however worthy or
unworthy others may think it may be, detracts from honoring the vets.
I consider it to be in poor taste to use a Veteran's Day parade to spout out
either against or for current policies.

The name is more of a comment. :-)
My point was that the parade is a time to honor Vets, not to spout your
political views either way. I'm a #1 supporter of "Freedom of speech", but
out of respect we need to know when to shut up.
Are you listening Hollywood? Shut up and sing!

I watched our local parade on tv and the announcers totally snubbed the
V.V. Motorcycle Club that were riding in it.
They were never properly announced and the female announcer changed the
subject altogether when her co-host said "hey, how about those
motorcycles!"
I could have slapped the both of them thru the tv! I hope they catch
some flack for that.
