Did bush finally bite the hand that feeds him?
Southern Baptists blast Bush for efforts to mobilize churches
Friday, July 2, 2004
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(07-02) 15:53 PDT NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) --
The Southern Baptist Convention, a conservative denomination closely
aligned with President Bush, said it was offended by the Bush-Cheney
campaign's effort to use church rosters for campaign purposes.
"I'm appalled that the Bush-Cheney campaign would intrude on a local
congregation in this way," said Richard Land, president of the
Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.
"The bottom line is, when a church does it, it's nonpartisan and
appropriate. When a campaign does it, it's partisan and
inappropriate," he said. "I suspect that this will rub a lot of
pastors' fur the wrong way."
The Bush campaign defended a memo in which it sought to mobilize
church members by providing church directories to the campaign,
arranging for pastors to hold voter-registration drives, and talking
to various religious groups about the campaign.

And well they should - they lose their tax-free status if they get involved in
political endeavors.

Majority of Southern Baptist members are Democratic that including
Richard Land too.
GWB didn't carry the catholic vote in 1988. It's possible this time,
President GWB lived and acted close to God's Biblical Principles. If
I were Jewish I would believe like a Jew. If I were Muslin I would
believe like Muslin and call myself a Jihad warrior. But Kerry
"sinner" called himself a Catholic then act "non-Catholics" against it
teaching. Kerry "turncoat, philandering, backslider" should not refer
himself as Catholic faithful on another hand it nothing he has not
done before. There are consequences for sins, God loves the sinner
but also tells the sinner to turn from his wicked ways and sin no
more. For the sake of his self-righteous and misguided morality God
have mercy on him. Sacraments and communion given to anyone who steps
forward to receive it, regardless of who they are.

just digging up old bones, Jane. The boy is moaning because Kerry is
a Catholic but doesn't display himself as one. He therefore does not
like Kerry. So sad when we have to background check our politicians
for what religion they are and how they adhere to it before we cast
our votes.
Seems there's not much separation between the two afterall in the
States. As he says, GWB lives and acts close to God's Biblical
principles - what with all that lying, subversion and torture and all.
I bet he's a real contender for sainthood.

They still govern according to the US constitution, regardless of the fact
that they are religious. That is the difference between the American
democracy and theocracies like Iran and Saudi America (funny how all the
extant theocracies, at least the ones I can think of, are muslim...the wave
of the future?) If they begin to impose their religion on the state, then
it gets scary...
The boy who doesn't like Kerry is a bit nutty, methinks! As I have
mentioned, my mother is a devout Catholic who belongs to pro-life
organizations and is anti-porn. However, she is a social Liberal and always
votes that way. I am more pro-choice and anti-censorship (except when it
comes to child porn), yet I always vote Conservative. Even though they are
more likely to be "antis", the majority of Conservative policies are more to
my liking. Religion should not enter into politics at all, as far as I am
concerned.

It's true - it was also on both CNN and MSNBC. They cycle through their stories

Where's Jane?
If that is true, and the link was gone when I tried to read it, it is
wrong,
of course.

"If that is true... it is wrong, of course"?? How many hours have you
been driving *this* time? That's a contradictory statement.
You know Exactly what I meant!

Southern Baptists blast Bush for efforts to mobilize churches

Credit where credit is due, that wasn't how I saw it. What Jane was saying
(I believe) is that IF the story were true, then in her opinion what Bush
was doing was wrong.
