Future space shuttle flights have been suspended. There is really no
major problem; they're just being cautious, right? I tell you the
space shuttle is doomed.

A chunk of foam fell off the external fuel tank but missed the orbiter.
It was a similar chunk that hit Columbia that doomed it. NASA has
reduced the problem of foam falling off the fuel tank, but not stopped
it. So while the current mission has dodged the bullet it would be
irresponsible to launch any more.
However, the space shuttle is outdated junk that was never properly
funded in its design phase. The sooner it is scrapped and replaced by a
simpler space plane the better.

That's the problem with American design. Nasa has lost far more astronauts
than
the Soviet Union/Russia lost kosmonauts. The same thing with American cars,
they
look nice, but are more fragile than a Lada. :)
If the astronauts cannot repair the damaged tile they should stay in the ISS
till the
Russians can save them with their Soyuz.
Kind Regards,
Barbarossa

'Simpler Space Plane'??? Ain't no sech animule. That's the one disservice
that TV and Science Fiction have done; they trivialized the monumental
engineering task that going into orbit really is. Space operations are not
Star Trek, and it's not likely that anyone reading this will live long
enough to even see an Impulse engine, much less Warp Drive. You go with
what you've got, and what we got is chemical reaction engines. Personally,
I'm still leary of the SRBs, I don't like man-rated artillary. NASA
scrubbed the flying penguin due to problems with the new engine design and
a 'sea change' in the funding department. My biggest hope is from the
Private Sector. If there's a buck to be made in space, some bright boy
will come up with the means to make it. We don't give these folks near the
credit that they deserve, and there are millions of them all told.

What I meant by space plane (which isn't a fair name in retrospect,
NASA's own CEV is better if less descriptive) is a return to the
simpler capsule only type design that sits on top of the rocket. More
like a resuable Soyuz capsule perhaps with wings or in a delta wing
design. The payload that currently goes in the shuttle bay goes in a
separate compartment behind the new vehicle or on another rocket
entirely.
The simple act of putting the crew vehicle on top of a rocket rather
than on its back removes all of the falling foam problems straight
away.
In retrospect the Space Shuttle was a step too far for the America. It
was unwilling to put the level of money into it to make it viable. The
SRBs were one of many compromises and I wouldn't trust a firework
strapped to a side of a ship during launch.
The private sector will get a manned craft to orbit eventually, though
it is a far bigger step than the up-down hop done so far.

NASA ran out of money to finance future
