Spies make use of Windows holes


Governments may be exploiting vulnerabilities in the Windows operating
system to commit computer espionage, David Aucsmith, chief technical
officer for security at Microsoft, said last week.

Aucsmith revealed that Microsoft has to lodge copies of its source
code with governments, including the US and the UK, as a condition of
supplying them.

"We have to bear in mind that because governments have access to
source code, they could find a flaw in it and exploit it," he said.
"But since governments know we supply the code to other governments,
they have a vested interest in us plugging the vulnerabilities."
