Avoiding the sun in a bid to reduce the risk of skin cancer actually puts you
in more danger of cancer overall, a leading professor has claimed.
Prof Cedric Garland, of the University of California, said exposure to the sun
was the main source of vitamin D, which has been found to reduce the risk of
colon, breast, prostate and other cancers.
He said other researchers' advice to avoid the sun "would not be the best
strategy for reducing overall incidence of cancer". In a letter published in
the British Medical Journal, Prof Garland said moderate sun exposure - around
10-15 minutes a day weather-permitting - should be recommended to people living
in the UK.
But cancer charities warned that even such a short time in the sun could cause
skin damage.
Prof Garland wrote: "Since the UK is located at northern latitudes
supplementation of the diet with vitamin D would be helpful, in addition to
encouraging moderate exposure to the sun."
Prof Garland said that people in the UK could not synthesise vitamin D from
November to the end of March and so by December they had become deficient.
Spending a short time in the sun without sunscreen would help improve Britons'
levels of the key vitamin, he wrote.
The advice contradicts that of the majority of health experts who urge people,
especially young children, to cover up in the sun, use sunscreens or avoid
going out when it is sunny.
But Prof Garland agreed with other researchers who raised concerns about creams
giving a false sense of security and encouraging people to think they can spend
longer in the sun.
He wrote: "Sunscreens should be used with caution until products are available
that block ultraviolet A with the same degree of protection of ultraviolet B."
However, he said avoiding the sun completely was not the answer to reducing the
overall number of cancer cases.

I have had this belief for a long time now - too much of any one thing
is bad for you - but eliminate it from your life completely and it's
_also_ bad. The scientists who tout that *no* sun is actually
*beneficial* are the same paradigm-locked boys who claimed that a
low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet was the answer to obesity. The real
answer my friends, is moderation. Moderation is the key. :-)

It's true. My wifes sister kept out of the sun, always covered up, sure
enough, got a skin cancer (melanoma) on the back of her leg.
She is a pommie, living in Australia and she was always scared of
getting burnt. Told her to go out and get a tan going, best protection
for the sun. But did she listen...no not one word. Now, you would think
she would listen to me, being part 1/4 aboriginal, and having darker
skin but nooooo

No, the insane are known for running around completely naked when they finally
go over the edge. ;-)
