Georgia: Ajara Leader Counts On Russian Help
November 26, 2003 2030 GMT
Aslan Abashidze, the leader of Ajara, an autonomous province of
Georgia, said Nov. 26 he counts on help from Russian troops stationed
in Ajara should Tbilisi seek to reassert control over Georgia. "About
70 percent of the personnel are residents of Ajara, who will be
defending their own interests, the interests of their families and
their region," he said. Russian officials insist troops stationed in
Georgia will not interfere there.
