Apparently those Iraqis who voted with the purple fingers
are having second thoughts. Security in the green zone
was turned over to Iraqis some time back (as Stephen Douglas
is so fond of reminding us).

What do the Iraqis who voted for their democratic government have to
do with this? Those people with purple ink stained fingers were voting
for democracy. This was an attack aimed at *destroying* democracy. Try
not to be so happy about it.
The Iraq Parliament Attack: Al-Qaeda Sends a Message
Thursday, Apr. 12, 2007
By BRIAN BENNETT/BAGHDAD
[excerpt] Within an hour of the explosion, a message from the al-Qaeda-
controlled Islamic State in Iraq was posted on a prominent militant
website, muslm.net, calling the blast a "message" to anyone who
cooperates with "the occupier and its agents." It said ominously, "We
will reach you wherever you are"
The extremists want to stop efforts of reconciliation between the
Iraqi government and an Iraqi-led, nationalist faction of the
insurgency that has turned on al-Qaeda in recent weeks. That was the
likely motive in an earlier attack on March 23, when Deputy Prime
Minister Salam al-Zubaie was hospitalized after an attack reportedly
carried out by a guard who detonated a suicide vest at al-Zubaie's
compound on the edge of the Green Zone. Al-Zubaie, a Sunni from a
powerful tribe west of Baghdad, is an important promoter of the
reconciliation policy. [end excerpt]

Stevie doesn't know what to like or dislike. I'm sure he
never signed up for regional sectarian warfare involving
5 or more mideast countries.
It could very well start with Turkish action against the
Kurds, followed by collapse of US authority (what little
there is), then Iranian, Syrian, Saudi, Egyptian, involvement
in backing their favored sects in Iraq.
I guess we 'won'. Saddam has been deposed, the Iraqis have had
elections.

Stevie doesn't know what to like or dislike.

On the contrary, I know exactly what I like and dislike. For instance,
I dislike the terrorists in Iraq, who are doing everything they can to
keep the fledgling democracy in Iraq from succeeding. And you're
cheering them on.

I'm sure he never signed up for regional sectarian

While you, on the other hand, are the pinnacle of expertise? Too bad
you killfiled me couldn't read the article I posted, which showed that
Al Qaeda was responsible for that attack. Al Qaeda is concerned that
one of the insurgency groups is working on making a peace agreement
with the Iraqi government, and the terrorists will do whatever they
have to do to keep that from happening. And you'll be right here
cheering the terrorists on every step of the way.

The bombs in Iraq are being placed by people who
don't want a single government, or at least not
anything like you imagine. The Kurds have *Zero*
interest in going back under the thumb of an Iraqi
national government, the Sunni don't want to live
in an Iran-style shi'a state, and the shi'a have
a comfortable majority.

Same here Stevie, same here. Or should I say 'exactly who I like and
dislike?'
You ask about my comment regarding your style of post of late. How I
conclude that this group is 'getting to you'.
Anyone reading your reply to Randy can see. It's very obvious you
know.
Yet bravely, in the best traditions of martydom, you flail wildy,
attempting to repel those who dare to assail the ivory turrets of your
faith. A faith both in a Devinity and a Political system.
How have you changed of late? Your standard undertones of sneering
superiority have emerged from their dark cupboards, and are more and
more evident. At one time they were disguised, albeit thinly. Now they
are given free reign. Your posts are written in the hope of hurting,
the wish to denigrate.
It's good to see. Keep it up. Perhaps you too, one day, will become
human.

And of course Steven's ilk are just as prepared for the future Iraq as
they've been prepared for the present they've managed to stumble and
fumble into.
Just like they've been able to predict the present in Iran since the
time they intervened and overthrew a democratically elected non
sectarian government there fifty odd years ago.
It's safe to assume that they're no more qualified to shape the future
than they've been able to competently shape the present.

We should definitely let the sunnis and shiites duke it out.
I wish we could do more to help the Kurds though. They more
than any others truly WANT our presence in their region and
WANT association with the US. The Kurdish areas are screaming
out for a UN peacekeeping contingent.

That's right, you're not interested in the reconciliation efforts
between the two sects. Nope, you're right there with the Al Qaeda
terrorists hoping that reconciliation effort is not successful.

It sounds more to me like an attack aimed at getting rid of an invading
force, a la French Resistance. It looks like we've got 2 things going on:
a civil war between 2 rival Muslim sects (Sunni and Shia), which was
provided an opportunity to manifest itself in the power vacuum the U.S.
created. The other thing going on is, of course, the Resistance, which is
directed to get an invading force out. We would do the same, here,
if we were invaded.

Please read the news article I posted, especially the excerpt you
snipped, which says things that completely contradict your post. This
was an Al Qaeda attack, intended to send a message to a faction of the
Sunni insurgency that is working on reconciliation policy with the
Iraqi government. This attack had nothing to do with rival sects. It
had everything to do with *preventing* a reconciliation between the
rival sects.

Suicide bomber breaches Green Zone to attack Iraq parliament

http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=565162007

This is pretty significant.
There may not be as many bombs going off in Baghdad as before but
they're becoming more focused on their targets. They dropped a bridge
spanning the Tigris in the capitol the same day.
