It's hard to watch television, seeing up close the tear-streaked
faces of the poorest and frailest crying out for something as basic as
clean water.
But we must face the reality. We must watch. We have to pay attention
to the worst disaster nature that has ever slammed into our country.
The land of the free. The land of the brave. The land of opportunity.
I question that opportunity for the thousands left dead, mainly because
they didn't have the money or transportation to get out of New
Orleans and other parishes and cities now submerged or flattened.
Five days ago Hurricane Katrina held hands with a budget-cutting
government and between the two, destroyed lives, cities and much hope.
Where were the government's priorities when, according to most
reports, those in the know had plenty of information the levees and
other structures wouldn't stand up to a major storm? Saving money,
cutting corners and thinking the worst wouldn't happen has killed and
displaced, sickened and left desperate hundreds of thousands.
I turn on the TV news each night and hear about bodies floating and the
stranded begging for help. I can't help but think this isn't just
survival of the fittest, but also survival of the richest. The Haves
got out. The Have Nots are left behind, even dying in a city turned to
utter madness.
The images of New Orleans drowning, parts of the Gulf Coast splintered
as if giants had marched over the streets, and the weakest clinging to
life grow more disturbing by the hour.
How can we complain about the gas prices when an entire section of our
country and one of its most famous cities gasps for breath? These
people have lost their homes, their loved ones and can't even sleep
safely at night for fear of being killed, beaten or raped.
This is humanity at its breaking point. The worst in our souls battles
the best.
A friend of mine from New Orleans called it an apocalypse. He got out.
He was white, middle-aged and probably left in a Volvo.
Aid trickles in. But not fast enough.
It's hard to bemoan gas prices rising to $4 a gallon when countless
in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast are dead and more sure to die
from lack of services and diseases brewing in the brackish waters.
Those with ties to the city knew this day could - and would - dawn.
I talked to several New Orleans natives the night before Katrina hit
and they said it was always on people's minds.
Tim LaBruyere, an Asheville man who grew up in the now-flooded city,
said the locals have long feared the coming of the monster. He had
predicted on Sunday night the powerful storm could become the "Big
One," given a chance.
"There's no question," he said, "this is the dreaded evil
hurricane that could kill New Orleans."
His prophecy, unfortunately, is ringing true. On Monday morning, he and
others thought the city had survived the storm. They breathed in
relief, but exhaled too soon.
Katrina, when all is tallied, buried and later rebuilt, promises to
make Camille look like the bratty little sister.
"This is the one," LaBruyere said, "I used to fear."
