damascus . Syria said its air defences opened fire on Israeli warplanes
which had violated Syrian airspace at dawn yesterday, ratcheting up the
tension between the neighbouring foes.
A Syrian cabinet minister warned that the nation's leadership was
considering its response to the Israeli "aggression" while in Israel the
military declined any comment.
"Enemy Israeli planes penetrated Syrian airspace from the Mediterranean
Sea heading towards the northeast, breaking the sound barrier," a Syrian
army spokesman told the official Sana news agency. "Our air defences
repulsed them and forced them to leave... after the Israeli planes dropped
munitions, without causing human or material loss," he said, without
giving further information on what exactly was dropped.
Syria's allegations came amid a war of words with Israel, with each
blaming the other for stoking regional tensions and for the failure to
revive peace talks that have been stalled for seven years. Information
Minister Mohsen Bilal told Al Jazeera that Syria's leadership was "giving
serious consideration to its response... to this aggression."
In Israel, the military refused to comment on Syria's claims, saying: "We
do not comment on such reports." Former major general Uzi Dayan said the
military's silence was an indication of Israel's eagerness not to allow
the incident to stoke tensions with Syria.
"Israel is active on many fronts in the Middle East but we have no
intention to bring about a deterioration in the situation. That is why the
Israeli reaction was so short and restrained," he told private Channel Two
television.
A Syrian minister admitted to Al Jazeera's English-language channel that
it remained unclear whether the Israeli aircraft had actually carried out
an attack. "They intervened in our airspace... which they should not do -
we are a sovereign country and they should not come into airspace,"
Expatriate Affairs Minister Bussaina Shaaban said. "We do not know yet" if
the aircraft dropped anything. "The investigation is still going on on the
ground," she said.
In June 2006, Israeli warplanes flew over President Bashar Al Assad's
palace in northern Syria while he was inside, an action Damascus condemned
as an "act of piracy". Over the past few months, Israeli and Syrian
leaders have both said their countries do not want a war, but were
preparing for any possibility while each side has accused the other of
arming for a conflict.

Other reports stated that it was a formation of 4 or 5 Israeli
warplanes. Once fired upon they dropped their munitions and split.
The lack of the weight if their ordinance makes them more
maneuverable.
4 or 5 jets flying above mach 1 and heading toward, of all places,
Northeastern Syria near the Turkish border? Sound a tad like their
attack on Iraq's Osirak nuke facility in '81.
An Israeli official explained it all yesterday by saying IAF jets fly
into Syrian airspace all the time.

Hey! Good news for a change.
That's what they need, a 'good' war.If the US remembers it's inaction
until 'conflict was almost over' policy, such as employed in WW1 and
WW2, then we should have some exciting headlines as they busy
themselves exterminating one-another.
Stephanie can 'read' the epitaphs and revel in the slaughter, we can
all benefit from recent technology and watch it in full detail.
It will make a good 'test' for 'God', too. After all, 'He' should take
the part of his 'Chosen People', so this looks like being a
very....revealing...episode in our blood-splattered history.

I've been feeling that something horrendous is about to happen there. The
US election's little more than a year away. It's complicated, of course,
like the intrigues of the Mideast and Western meddling almost always are,
but it was America's foolish invasion of Iraq that primarily has set a
perilous course. The terrorism factor seems little more than a front for
naked raw aggression to secure oil reserves and profiteer from the
conquest.
I have this pervasive pessisism that America has moved into a moral,
economic, and political debacle mirroring the Soviet Union's before it
collapsed. Israel is little more than America's obedient guard dog in the
region. The constant Israeli agitation of Syria, and Bush's fingering
Iran, seem jointly calculated to bring on justification at some point for
additional warfare.

Agreed. I have long held that idea.
Actually, it's worse now. When a school playground has two bullies who
detest one-another, then there is a balance. An uneasy balance, but
some degree of order exists.
In the playground where there is but the one bully, the tormented
children unite in gangs to overcome the problem after a while.
Unlikely friendships are formed with the intent of removing the

What happens when the two bullies form an alliance? Or a third bully
arises and challenges their alliance?

That's why the balance is an 'uneasy' one Doc. I haven't ever come
across two bullies of equal strength and intent forming a true
alliance though. Not in a National or in a playground situation.
If such a thing were to happen, it would be fragile in the extreme,
and the trust that forms part of any true alliance would not be
present...Both bullies know exactly how they would take advantage of a
situation, including renaging on any promise. I suppose that's why
such a thing is rare, unheard of even.
Imagine the US forming an alliance with the USSR in 1970...No, perhaps
not, too hard to imagine. So is it in the playground, both bullies
want 'the final word'. That is the nature of these types.
A third, fourth or whatever follows the same path. All seek domination
over the week and the strong. Again, that's the nature of bullies.

But, if one bully temporarily loses his strength, as Russia did (as the
core of the USSR), might not that bully form an uneasy alliance with the
top bully as Russia has with the US (and Europe, and China)? As long as
the faded bully still has a good hard fast heavily damaging kick or two
left, might not the superior bully, fearful of a long hospitalization,
leave him alone? Since bullies typically don't like to get stomped, the
accommodation, however unstable and doomed, would seem to be of momentary
advantage.
Of course, if the diminished bully had something else of value, say,
access to drugs for great profit, or he had easy free connections to cheap
playground prostitutes (and the bigger bully had a weakness for 'em) might
not this offer help appease the bigger bully?
Bullies can be bargained with if the negotiator has something of great
value to them they can't get easily. I know, because I negotiated with
them. And I also know that bullies do their best to terrorize and bluff,
partly to keep themselves from getting humiliated for being weak or
scared, or just plain getting stomped good in retaliation for their
harassment.
The world's in an uneasy aftermath of the fall of one great unified
bully -- one comprised of many parts, not all liking the quilt of
power-sharing -- only about 15 years ago. It was one of the largest empire
crumbles in human history, and the fastest, but it was primarily a fall
from within. The US bully will not likely be as fortunate in its decline
because of tampering with oil investments critical to its economic
strength (and, hence, critical to its defense and overall well being).
The bullies of the world will, sooner or later, clash over energy (and
other)resources, violently, centering in the Middle East region, and I
believe America will have its bullying days brought to a disastrous
denouement. Other bullies will suffer as much, too.
Where all the rest of us will be out in the playground when this ugly
donnybrook occurs, will largely determine whether we get to survive to
catch the bus back home.
Doc :))~

What you said about bullies is generally true. What I'm saying is the
exception, not the rule.
Force is more often required to repel those who live by force or threat.

Interesting things to think about................. The discussions
below the first article are worthy of contemplation.
Staging Nukes for Iran?
http://tpmcafe.com/blog/coffeehouse/2007/sep/05/staging_nuke_for_iran
By Larry Johnson, former CIA officer
Why the hubbub over a B-52 taking off from a B-52 base in Minot, North
Dakota and subsequently landing at a B-52 base in Barksdale,
Louisiana? That's like getting excited if you see a postal worker in
uniform walking out of a post office. And how does someone watching a
B-52 land identify the cruise missiles as nukes? It just does not make
sense.
So I called a old friend and retired B-52 pilot and asked him. What he
told me offers one compelling case of circumstantial evidence. My
buddy, let's call him Jack D. Ripper, reminded me that the only times
you put weapons on a plane is when they are on alert or if you are
tasked to move the weapons to a specific site.
Then he told me something I had not heard before.

The Intel Center, an independent analysis group which has studied the
tape, said that bin Laden makes no overt threat, no indication of an
impending attack upon America or its citizens. Homeland Security
Director Michael Chertoff has also said there is no reason to push the
panic button now.
But Scheuer is not convinced.
"The Intel Center is almost always right," he said. "I think there's
an overwhelming threat in it. Bin laden, again, offered us a chance to
convert to Islam, which is required in their religion before they
attack us. So to say there's no threat in this message is just 180
degrees incorrect."
