Hostage situation reported at Southbank office building evacuated
Police have widened the section of Jacksonville's Southbank that is shut
down as SWAT and bomb team members
"It just makes you feel upset with the person who would do such a
thing," said Joe Strode, who works on the 13th floor of the Southtrust
building at 1301 Riverplace Blvd.
The building was evacuated when a caller told police someone was being
held at gunpoint on the 13th floor of the building and that an explosive
device might be involved.
The floor houses Rogers Towers law firm, which also has offices on parts
of the 12th, 14th and 15th floors of the 27-floor structure.
Police said they could not confirm whether there was any kind of device
inside.
Police have cordoned off Riverplace Boulevard from Main Street to
Prudential Drive.
Hundreds were evacuated, including children in a day care center on the
building's first floor.
The Southtrust building at 1301 Riverplace Boulevard houses Rogers
Towers law firm on the 13th floor.

Southbank evacuations may hinder tonight's Bush rally

A veterans rally for President Bush featuring U.S. Sen. John McCain is
in limbo after the evacuation of the SouthTrust building Wednesday.
McCain is scheduled to speak at 6 p.m. inside the Hilton hotel next to
the SouthTrust tower. Bush campaign officials in Jacksonville and
elsewhere say they are watching the situation, and plans to monitor the
events over the next few hours.
McCain is speaking in Cape Canaveral at noontime and has not arrived
yet.
Campaign officials are largely set up in advance at the hotel, but
awaiting how police handle SouthTrust's events. At least one campaign
worker already is at the hotel.
"We're playing it by ear," said Alberto Martinez, a Florida spokesman
for the Bush campaign in Tallahassee. As for McCain's appearance, he
said,
"Obviously, the No. 1 concern is for the people going to be attending
the rally, the senator and the safety of others there.
