Thai Muslims naming babies Saddam in protest over US invasion

Muslims in southern Thailand are naming their new-born babies Saddam in protest
over the United States' invasion of Iraq and in support of its ousted
president, according to a community leader.
"We admired Saddam because he was brave enough to fight the world's only
superpower and we believe that the war was unjustified," said Rawsedee
Lertariyapongkul, chairman of the Muslim Youth Association of Thailand.
Newspaper reports from the Muslim-majority southern provinces bordering
Malaysia said many babies were being given the name of the captured former
leader, but exact figures were still being prepared.
Rawsedee said he expected many more parents would honour Saddam by bestowing
his name on their sons, even though they often knew little about his history or
even that he had now been captured by US soldiers.
"We don't care about his past. At least in the last decade we have not heard of
him doing anything really bad. And all the serious allegations against him only
came from the United States side," he told AFP.
The Bangkok Post quoted 36-year-old Navi Tohyor of Narathiwat province as
saying that he and his wife had called their baby son Saddam out of admiration
for the former Iraq leader.
"What Mr. Saddam did is right and legitimate. He stood up against the US, the
foreign invader," Navi told the daily.
"He's a fighter, not a bandit. I'm proud to name my son after him."
Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist nation but five percent of its population
is Muslim, and most live in the five southernmost provinces.
Thai Muslims also seized on the name "Osama" after the September 2001 attacks
on Washington and New York allegedly carried out by Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda
terrorist network.
Despite the phenomenon, Thai Muslims are relatively well integrated into the
general population and while sectarian violence flares occasionally, relations
with Buddhists are generally peaceful.
In Iraq meanwhile, public records show that while in past years many new-borns
were named after the former Iraqi dictator, since the fall of Baghdad parents
were opting instead for the names of religious leaders.

There you go...reading and believing.
I've been in Thailand and wandering the South of that country
throughout November. In fact I've only just got back. I met a large
number of Budhists. I also talked to Thai Muslims.
A more settled Country would be hard to find in the world Tony. The
topic of the Iraq war was mentioned often enough. There was no taking
of sides (other than that a token force of Thai soldiers were in Iraq
in an humanitarian role)
What are you saying? More importantly why are you saying it?
Don't copy/paste. Do as I did. Mix with Thai people in the more remote
regions of the South as well as in the cities. Talk and learn.
Then you will have a better understanding of people.
Odd, but all of the Thai Muslims I spoke with were at one in
condemning the regime of Saddam, and glad that he had been removed.
I fancy your source is suspect. I know mine is correct. It is from
first hand experience. Yours is from some dubious article.

Hey Ricky,
Tony grew up in NJ and according to him he knows more about the rest of the
world than the rest of us...even us who have travelled...'cos there are
people of all nations and nationalities in NJ. That's where he got his
"feel" for the world from.
I just got home from meeting with some friends, Palestinians, all of who are
delighted that Saddam was apprehended.
Tony's "first hand experience" is his local conditorie (<=sp) in NJ which is
owned by Arabs.
Asking Tony to mix with people is like asking water to mix with oil...it
just doesn't work :-)

Congratulations Ricky! That is the most intelligent comment I've seen
posted on here for a long time. I am sick and tired of the same
regurgitated ***** fabrications of a Neocon press and Christian fund a
mental media. Don't these wingnuts and their groupies and followers ever
get the picture, let alone the message IT'S MOSTLY BULL *****!

Hey WH and Torque!
Thanks. Anyone who's life is confined to NJ must lack a fair amount of
real world experience!
Micheal;...Umm, I try to keep away from the local food! I never do
though, and always end up in the local chemist's buying tablets to let
me wander some distance from the toilet! It's pretty spicy stuff!
I always 'wander' in these winter months. Just back in France for
Christmas. I'll be off again in early January for Kuwait, Nepal and
Calcutta as well as on to Thailand (Love the place)
WH...I was in Borneo (Brunei, Sarawak and Sabah at the end of November
too. That was....informative! Tony would profit from a trip that way!
It's so much more....satisfying....to see things, to be there, than
simply to read dubious reports and seize on them as items graven in
stone.
Anyway, again..thanks Torque and WH. It's good to see people with
reason and common sense in here! Grins....Ricky
