Sixty years ago, another allied landing took place in France. For
Nostradamus, although the earlier one in Normandy was present in
his mind, that other one was closer to his heart. After all,
France's best friend, the Great US (as he often calls her), had
sacrificed thousands of her sons to chase away Hitler from
Nostradamus' homeland.
*
So, let's see how Nostradamus deals with this historical event,
by reading first his original poetry and second, the prose hidden
therein in line-based cryptic anagrams :
*
-------------- C E N T V R I E___D I X I E S M E. ------------
------------------ (édition prétendue de 1568) ---------------
*
--------------------------- X I I I. -------------------------
--------- Soulz la pasture d'animaux ruminant ----------------
--------- Par eux conduicts au ventre herbipolique -----------
--------- Soldatz caichez les armes bruit menant, ------------
--------- Non loing temptez de cite Antipolique. -------------
*
Those who can read French realize that a peculiar feature of that
modern war had struck Nostradamus' imagination. He describes what
he sees using words of his times. Rather than speaking of
armoured tanks firing a canon, he prefers to speak of cow-like
animals led by soldiers hidden in their belly and whose weapons
make noise... near the French city of Antibes.
*
A good description of the August 15, 1944, allied landing in
Provence. No date is given (after all, Nostradamus is not going
to tip Hitler about that), and the only geographical reference is
to the main city close to the site of that landing, Antibes.
*
After August 1944, this text comes alive. France can see what
Nostradamus was alluding to. Before then, impossible to do. Which
begs the question: what is the purpose of a prophecy which cannot
be understood before the fact? Answer:
*
--------- L'An XLIU, en Aoust, prez d'Antibes, l'U S ---------
--------- desbarque vite en la chère Prouence pour -----------
--------- chasser Hitler de chez Nostradamus et --------------
--------- l'inciter à vne mort de honte en vng trou ! --------
*
Forgive me, but I really had a good laugh, after having
decyphered the last line. Not only does Nostradamus give the date
and place of that landing in line 1, not in line 4 as had the
original poetry, but he even goes further and speaks of the
eventual consequence of the US landing in Nostradamus' country.
*
As usual, in an approximate modern English and with asterisks
marking words no longer used or spelled thus, here goes: 'In the
Year XLIU, in *August*, *near* Antibes, the US *lands* quickly in
the dear *Provence* to chase away Hitler from Nostradamus' home
and to lead him to die a shameful death in a hole!'
*
Clever, eh, this Nostradamus?!
