fireworks (in my humble neighborhood they fire off guns),
making salads, baking beans, and generally having a good
time for the whole family, remember what America used to
be: a quasi- Judeo-Christian nation with some semblance
of faith in God, national patriotism, pride and dignity.
There was a time when God's Ten Commandments and Golden
Rules weren't egregious anathema to the U.S. Government.
There was a time when "all men are Created equal" meant
something to Americans -- even to the rich, politicians,
judges and lawyers! Remember, even the founding fathers
of this country showed a modicum of respect for God and
His immutable Law. Now, GOD IS DEAD in Washington, D.C.!
Rather, their gods are gods of gold, and gods of silver.
They worship Atheists and Atheism. They are Antichrists,
truly the ***** of Babylon, the prostitute of the world
for sale to the highest bidder. They've sold their souls.
If you do still fly an American flag, consider lowering
it to half-mast in mourning over what used to be a good
country, a strong, traditional-family values nation that
God-fearing Conservatives were nationally proud of. Sure,
America has always had her problems with racism, bigotry,
greed, indoctrination, unwarranted arrogance, xenophobia,
worlds of bad karma--with more than enough to go around
for everybody. Even so, working-class American families
managed to live through it all, many to a ripe old age,
bouncing healthy grandchildren on their knees, children
who were born & raised by their father and their mother.
Sure, some weren't so lucky, but most were. Traditional
family used to mean something in America. Not any more
it doesn't. Now the father is commonly shunned, mocked,
and worse. Immoral single parent households have become
the rule rather than the exception. The politicians are
morally bankrupt. America worships money, and hates God.
America's public schools are the Churches--brainwashing
institutions--of Rabidly Anti-Christian Liberal Atheism!
And what of the Abortion Holocaust? Over one million per
year, Over ONE MILLION unborn human children *murdered*
in cold blood! Do the greedy politicians care? Hell No!
So, at this late date in history, America stands at the
precipice, because she has become so thoroughly corrupt
and viciously Anti-Christian. Her Judgment draweth nigh...

You left out the first line, in which Adams makes clear that he was
referring to July 2, the day the Continental Congress voted for
independence and the final draft of the Declaration was finished. This
is not unimportant. (The draft was tweaked a bit during the 3rd and
into the 4th, adopted by twelve of the thirteen colonies on July 4, and
was sent to the printer for public distribution. It wasn't released in
Philadelphia until the 8th.)
To Adams, the 2nd was the far more significant date. John wrote
Abigail on July 3, 1776 and said, in full:
The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the
History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by
succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to
be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion
to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with
Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one
End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.
You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well
aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to
maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet
through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory.
I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that
Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should

Independence Day was his feeling for how Independence Day would be
celebrated by future generations.
