stories of people who can afford insurance, but don't have it because

my doctor regularly, I eat right, and get plenty of exercise. One
thing I really like is to power walk, usually two or three miles at a

I have insurance now, but there was a while there when I didn't. Yet
when I went to the emergency room (public) and I was very sick, I was
taken in and cared for. Of course I was billed for my treatment and
my stay; I did have to pay, yes, but I was not turned away. And I
wasn't even severely ill, bleeding out, unconscious - any of that.
I was just very sick, vomiting constantly, vomiting blood and bile
(yes, I know, absolutely disgusting but I have to paint the picture
for you), and I was dehydrated. They took me in, gave me an IV drip
to re-hydrate me, and gave me pain meds (morphine, there is a God! ;)
and anti-nausea medication.
So I'm not quite sure where this "if you have no insurance you're
turned away" is coming from. Yes, some private hospitals *will* turn
some away - but NOT if they are in an emergency and need medical
attention IMMEDIATELY to save their life. If someone is dying, do you
actually think the staff at the hospital will say: "I ahhhh, um, need
to see your insurance card, Sir." LOL.. of course not.

when I went to the emergency room (public) and I was very sick, I was

I was just very sick, vomiting constantly, vomiting blood and bile

for you), and I was dehydrated. They took me in, gave me an IV drip
to re-hydrate me, and gave me pain meds (morphine, there is a God! ;)
and anti-nausea medication.

really, really pay until your resources drop down to a paltry $2000 or less,
and then you qualify for Medicaid. Or, you wait until you're 62 and get
Medicare subsidies.
Americans must get almost dirt poor or be pretty old and then they get help.
Those who have liquidity in their bank accounts and aren't deemed disabled
or old or poor, get subsidized health insurance.
And that's the way it generally works here.

for some enjoyment during your later years, you may find, as have so many
Americans defeated by Father Time, that your treasure chest has been quickly
emptied out by greedy, over-priced corporate medical vultures.

career, and although some are undoubtedly caring individuals and altruistic,
many are simply in the field to easily get the glut of jobs available and
the fat paychecks.

it pays 'em a bit more. Everything is aimed at maximizing profits, and the
Florence Nightingales and Dr. Kildares really are not the rule.
I'm speaking from experience and not as a younger person who has a short
occasional stay in a hospital for a broken bone or pneumonia.
America should've had a fully subsidized, taxpayer-supported universal
healthcare system long ago but greed and self-interest has prevailed for
decades. An attempt was made by the Clinton administration in the early 90s
to pass a comprehensive national subsidized health plan for every citizen --
not just the most poor, most old, but everyone. It, of course, was beaten
down by heavy lobbying, watered down, hacked to pieces on the senate and
house floor, until it was a miserable mess.
The national "Part D" prescription plan passed several years ago has caused
entitlement recipients to be shuttled back and forth between many competing
insurance companies, with gaps in their formularies forcing the aged and
chronically sick to switch or pay more outta their pockets.
America's health industry seems nicer when you're younger and you're not
continually using the system, and it seems nicer to folks who have the money
to afford expensive private insurance, or folks who are loaded with
liquidity, the super-rich or upper middle class.
If you're young, under 45, loaded, or just plain lucky, America's greedy
corporate medical field looks much more inviting. Or, if you're a raving
nationalist, hepped up on America like a junkie on heroin, it seems a nice
system to ya.
For the rest of us, however, it's a costly stressful experience, and often a
nightmare in so many aspects.
Those who wish to defend money madness made off of sick or old people are
folks I hope end up in the system some day, chronically screwed up so
they'll get a real first-hand, eye-opening bad experience on what it's
really like to live in the world's richest nation, full of distractions,
toys, and luxuries, and instead have to suffer under the fist of those who
want lots of money and wish to live like kings and queens off our miseries.

Those who wish to defend money madness made off of sick or old people are
folks I hope end up in the system some day, chronically screwed up so
they'll get a real first-hand, eye-opening bad experience on what it's
really like to live in the world's richest nation, full of distractions,
toys, and luxuries, and instead have to suffer under the fist of those who=

I have insurance now, but there was a while there when I didn't.

when I went to the emergency room (public) and I was very sick, I
was taken in and cared for. Of course I was billed for my
treatment and my stay; I did have to pay, yes, but I was not
turned away. And I wasn't even severely ill, bleeding out,
unconscious - any of that. I was just very sick, vomiting
constantly, vomiting blood and bile (yes, I know, absolutely
disgusting but I have to paint the picture for you), and I was
dehydrated. They took me in, gave me an IV drip to re-hydrate me,
and gave me pain meds (morphine, there is a God! ;) and
anti-nausea medication.
So I'm not quite sure where this "if you have no insurance you're
turned away" is coming from. Yes, some private hospitals *will*
turn
some away - but NOT if they are in an emergency and need medical
attention IMMEDIATELY to save their life. If someone is dying, do

No, eric - I live here and I can only speak from my experiences and
others that I know experiences. I'm telling you that I was not turned
away when I was sick and uninsured. And I'm also telling you that
even a bum off the street, if he is in critical condition, he WILL be
taken in and treated. Some private hospitals will not take a sick
person in without insurance (I don't agree with that; they suck in my
eyes...snobby bastards), but even a private hospital will perform
surgery on someone critical in dire risk of losing their life.

loads of pain and vomiting blood. I wasn't dying and they still took
me. But yes, of course I was billed and had to pay. But the only
thing that would've happened to me if I didn't pay my medical bills is
my credit would've been shot to *****.
Yes, we can get "screwed" if we don't pay the medical bills, but we
won't be screwed as far as not getting the medical treatment we need.
But with regular doctors visits, no, you won't be seen without
insurance.. so you are right in that aspect. You must pay outta
pocket. but that is where Medicaid comes in...the state will pay for
your health care.
