The song is over 40 years old (1965). When it came out, it fast became
a single hit. It struck a chord among the American youth, especially
those males eligible for the draft, and those who were unable to vote
at 18, but were old enough to be used unfairly for war fodder.

Although the song has outdated references to the civil strife of the
60s, and the 18 year old vote issue, it's still amazing it is as
applicable to today's crisis-filled world as it was to the
crisis-filled world back then.

Nothing has really changed. Civil strife among the Afro-American
community has largely ended, but prejudice still goes on. The Mideast
continues to bubble and boil. (etc.) I'd like to see a lyricist put
together a song these days describing the current political/social
situation that would still be as relevant 4 decades from now.

It rather extraordinary in its "foresight," whether intentional or
accidental. The song has an almost timeless quality and has a relevancy
to this group's anxieties about an uncertain future. I think it's
important to underline that there was a pervasive feeling the "world"
was heading for destruction, that it was near, and that people in this
group, as well as many others today, think the "end" is near these
days. However, forty years have passed...get it?

I'm pleased to hear you like anti-war songs. Now, if you'd just
remember that any overreaction to today's political/social situation
("Islamaphobia"), even in the slightest, puts the world just a bit
closer to another senseless and bloody physical confrontation. Yep, we
can sing our idealistic hymns, and talk about peace till we're blue in
the face, but unless we fully understand how and why our leadership
manipulates us, and how and why we overreact to that manipulation,
we're never gonna' get anywhere near a more peaceful coexistence on
this mudball.
Incidentally, where exactly is your laundry room located in your house?
