The first line is Saddam's return from Egypt when an exile in 1968
The second line his true colours come to the fore, with a Stalinist
play all his rivals are disappeared and purges begin
The third line is a play on the ***** of Babylon theme using the
Republic of France as the adulterous lady; France being Iraq's biggest
trading nation and the allusion to the "deals" made.
The fourth line is Saddam's end at power and his wretched looks.
There is some significance in this last line, that has yet to play
out.

Iraq's land is not yet scorched. That will happen when it becomes the
theatre of Armageddon. From birth to ashes: the cradle of civilization is
where it will end. By the way, Armageddon is not where the war takes place.
It is where the evil spirits meet to plan the war.
